Destiny 2 Dev Diary Offers a Rundown of New Features

During the Destiny 2 Gameplay Premiere, Bungie debuted a dev diary going over many of the new features coming to Destiny 2. That video is now available independent of the livestream it debuted on, and is one of the best summaries of what players can expect to see when the game comes out later this year.

A New Story

Project Lead Mark Noseworthy sets up Destiny 2’s story by asking “What happens when a world of superheroes loses their powers, their history, and home?” When the game starts, as was seen in the opening Story mission of the game called Homecoming, a Cabal warlord named Dominus Ghaul has come to Earth to steal the Traveler and its Light for himself, leaving Guardians without their powers.

That sparks the main story of the game, which will task players with going out into the solar system to regain their powers, bring back the Vanguard (Cayde-6, Commander Zavala, and Ikora Rey), and retake the Last City.

Bungie is promising a cinematic campaign — something that was promised with the original, but never reached its potential until The Taken King expansion a year after the original game’s release. The developer hopes to make good on its promise this time, saying that Destiny 2 has more cinematics than ever before, more Story missions, side quests, and NPCs to deliver narrative.

Weapon Slots

Destiny 2 will change up how Destiny 1 handled weapon slots. Whereas, players equipped Primary, Special, and Heavy Weapons in Destiny 1, the slots have now been redesigned to be Kinetic, Energy, and Heavy.

One reason for that is very likely due to the constant struggle Destiny faced, especially in PvP, with powerful Special weapons like sniper rifles and shotguns dominating the playing field and reducing the use of primary weapons.

In effect, there are now two primary weapons, one that is kinetic (read: no elemental damage) and the other that gets an element. Primary weapons have now also expanded to include Sidearms, which were previously Special weapons, and the newly added Submachine Gun class. The third slot is still for Heavy weapons, but now that includes Sniper Rifles, Fusion Rifles, and Shotguns, as well as the new Grenade Launcher weapon type.

New Subclasses

Each of the three classes in Destiny will receive a new subclass, which look to replace the existing subclass of each matching element. The Warlock will have the Dawnblade, a solar subclass with a Super that shoots fiery beams of energy from a sword. Meanwhile, the Titan will add the Sentinel, a void subclass where the Titan can summon a shield which can be used for blocking as well as attack — even being thrown. Lastly, the Hunter gets Arcstrider, and arc subclass with a Super that causes the Hunter to summon an electrified staff with which to take out enemies.

More of Destiny’s Core

For those wondering if Destiny 2 was being reimagined from the ground up, the short answer is no. While there are plenty of new features, as mentioned above, the core activities like worlds to explore on Patrol, cooperative Strikes, Nightfall Strikes, and a Raid are all in the cards for the sequel. That also includes loot, with the promise of new armor, weapons, and exotics to chase.

Destiny 2 will launch on PS4 and Xbox One on September 8, 2017, with a release on PC at a later date.
