Although Destiny 2's Forsaken expansion doesn't launch until September 4th, Bungie is launching its pre-expansion update on August 28th. With it, will come a number of changes that will improve and tweak systems within Destiny 2, like mods.

But while players wait for the new changes to mods, they can actually prepare their arsenal by doing two things. One is optional, since it can still be done after the August 28th update, but another is very important and should be done before.

Choose an Element for Each Weapon

For players that have their favorite weapons ready to make the jump into Year 2 of Destiny 2, it’s important to note that the element of those weapons will be locked on August 28th. That means if a scout rifle has a solar mod equipped, it will become solar permanently when the update goes live this Tuesday. Time to start deciding which element each weapon should be.

Players can also acquire multiple versions of said weapon and create one version for each element, but not everyone will have the time to do so. On top of that, there are two exceptions to this rule in that the Escalation Protocol Sniper Rifle and Shotgun will be locked to solar, but everything else can be changed.

Dismantle Mods for Mod Components

The second thing players can start to do is dismantle all of their rare and legendary mods. Because all of these mods will no longer function after the Forsaken update, players can get a head start on some vault cleaning by dismantling all of them. First, we would recommend combining all rare mods into legendary mods (where possible) and then dismantling them, because a legendary mod guarantees a mod component when it’s dismantled. Rare mods have a chance to give mod components but it is not a guarantee.

Players will want to stock up on mod components because there will be a way for players to trade in their mod components and get some of the new Year 2 mods in exchange. We don't know exactly how it will work, but it might be that the Gunsmith will have a rotating inventory of mods available each week (or day) like he does now. Or mod components might be the currency for rolling a random Year 2 mod.

Either way, there is no point in holding on to those mods right now. And getting rid of them will help clear space for storing extra weapons, perhaps three Mannanan SR4 scout rifles – one of each element.

Don’t worry if you don’t have time to do this before August 28th, or you forget; there will still be time to dismantle. However, changing the element on a weapon does have a ticking clock, so make sure to lock everything in before the downtime begins August 28th in the morning.
