Forsaken has been a huge hit with Destiny 2 fans, bringing the depth and content that they have been hoping for since the game's original launch last year. There has been a lot of praise given to the Forsaken expansion, but one of the few major complaints about the expansion is centered around Masterwork Cores; in particular, their place as a consumable in the Infusion process and the overall scarcity of the material in the game's second year.

In its weekly blog, Bungie responded to the complaints and outlined the intention for Masterwork Cores, the problems that have arisen since the launch of Destiny 2: Forsaken, and how the developer plans to solve those problems with a future update.

Bungie explained that the intent for making Masterwork Cores a part of Infusion was to make Infusion a more important choice for players. With a rarer material being required to bring gear up to new Power levels, Bungie had hoped that it would change Infusion from how it has worked in Year 1. That is, Infusion has been a very inexpensive process allowing players to continually boost their weapons and armor. To continue that design decision, Bungie will not be removing Masterwork Cores as a requirement for Infusion.

Instead, Bungie is going to create more reliable and plentiful sources of earning Masterwork Cores. Bungie admitted that the drop rate and availability of Masterwork Cores are lower than expected. A lot of that has to do with the fact that Masterworking received an entire overhaul in Forsaken. Whereas in Year 1, Masterwork Cores could be earned on a pretty regular basis by dismantling Masterwork gear that dropped randomly, in Year 2, Masterwork changed to a 10-tier upgrade system, and the drop rate of fully Masterworked gear has virtually dried up.

In addition to creating more ways for players to get Masterwork Cores, Bungie says it will be renaming the material to better reflect its use for much more than just Masterworking gear. Bungie did not specify when this change would hit Destiny 2.

Destiny 2: Forsaken is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
