In Destiny 2, there are few achievements as exciting as reaching Trials of Osiris/Trials of the Nine's Lighthouse. Access to the Lighthouse is a reward for Destiny 2 players who manage a perfect record in Trials, losing to no opposing team. Otherwise, the Lighthouse, and its great rewards, are locked off from everyone.

The Lighthouse being a rare reward gives it an air of positivity and excitement. But there's now a growing and well-evidenced theory that the Lighthouse might be something else -- something nefarious.

The story cited for the theory comes largely from leaked Destiny 2 lore. The "Trials and Tribulations" Triumph rewards a page of the lore book each week to players who get a Trials of Osiris win each week. Dataminers are able to speed that process up and what they've found is revelatory.

The Trials lore book tells a story about the cult of Osiris researching the Lighthouse's purpose. The first major breakthrough comes when Brother Vance discovers that the Lighthouse appears to respond to the deaths of Guardians. Vance then uses the Trials to experiment with how the Lighthouse responds to Guardian deaths. It's at this point Vance visits Mara, who tells him to stop the Trials and to destroy his research.

Vance continues to experiment with the Trials and the "Music of Death." He even stops the Trials (a bit meta here) after a Guardian permanently dies, seeking the council of Osiris. Osiris tells him to stop, as well. The final entry has Vance creating the Infinite Simulacrum, which gives him a premonition or vision of sorts. He sees a "an angular |hungering patient yawning deep| shadow reached across Mercury." He also sees the Lighthouses falling under these shadows' grasp.

Finally, there's a separate message taken from the Saint's Vocation ship lore. In the message, Osiris tells Saint-14 "The Lighthouses are not what they seem. They may bring a ruin upon us that we have no answer for."

What the Lighthouses do remains a complete mystery. However, the story told in the current season of Destiny 2 makes something clear. The Lighthouses have a close tie to the Darkness beyond the limits of the universe. The Lighthouses also have an unsettling relationship with the deaths of Guardians. Whatever Bungie is building up to should make everyone very nervous. Fighting in the Trials may be contributing to a coming storm.

Destiny 2 is available now on Google Stadia, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
