Destiny 2's next expansion, Lightfall, will bring a host of new content for players to explore and conquer, including a powerful enemy known as the Tormentor. These formidable machines could present a significant challenge to even the most skilled Guardians. However, time will tell if Tormentors are full boss encounters that randomly appear, or something closer to an elite enemy like the Hive Guardians in Destiny 2's Witch Queen expansion.

Tormentors are hulking bipedal creatures, standing at least 10 feet tall with toned arms and legs. This new enemy also wields a two-handed scythe-like weapon that could be trouble for new and veteran Guardians. An early look at Tormentors in the latest Destiny 2: Lightfall trailer confirms how deadly they can be for a solo Guardian, and these imposing new foes have an intimidating look that is reminiscent of the Halo franchise's Hunters - except larger and likely more powerful.

Tormentors Have Some Very Powerful Crowd Control Abilities

Destiny 2 Lightfall Campaign Information

The Tormentor's abilities are secret at this point; but they can likely manipulate the battlefield using the darkness. It wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for Tormentors to create powerful vortexes of dark energy that could suck in and crush anything caught within. It is known that Tormentors can nullify a Guardian's abilities by suppressing their light, forcing them to rely on shooting alone. This mechanic is already present in Destiny 2's Season of The Seraph via certain enemies that can create a field of light-nullifying energy. Allowing players to experience this mechanic now is an intelligent way to prepare them for handling Tormentors in Lightfall.

Tormentors may also possess other abilities, such as strand or darkness-based attacks, that allow them to manipulate the environment and players' Guardians in ways Destiny 2's current enemy roster cannot. In terms of visual presence, the Tormentors make even Witch Queen's Hive Lightbearers look bland by contrast. The Lightbearers are already some of the most powerful enemies in the game, but they seem small and weak compared to the Tormentor. With greater difficulty also comes the possibility for better rewards in Destiny 2, especially if slaying a Tormentor drops a chest full of Strand-based guns and armor.

Bungie Needs To Utilize Tormentors In More Areas of The Game

One of the most exciting possibilities for Destiny 2 is Tormentors potentially showing up in more parts of the game. Unlike the Hive Guardians, who only appeared in designated locations during The Witch Queen expansion, a Tormentor could potentially arrive in a wider variety of locations and situations. This would make them even more unpredictable and challenging, providing a wealth of unexpected moments that can spice up stale content like strikes. If Bungie allows Tormentors to invade all PvE content in Destiny 2, maybe it will come around to letting Hive Guardians do the same in a future season.

Hopefully the Tormentors will be a formidable, celebrated addition to Destiny 2's Lightfall expansion, providing players with a thrilling and satisfying challenge. As Destiny 2 continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the Tormentors fit into the broader world and what new opportunities they bring to the sci-fi shooter.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
