Destiny 2: Lightfall's raid, Root of Nightmares, has had its final encounter beaten by a single player in a thrilling show of skill and patience. The latest raid for Destiny 2 arrived earlier this month and pitted Guardians against disciples of the Witness as they fight through a partially destroyed Pyramid ship.

The recent Lightfall expansion has seen a rollercoaster of public opinion across the past month of its existence. Many were disappointed with a storyline that felt underwhelming, particularly when Bungie's marketing had hyped up Lightfall's narrative to be its primary selling point. The backlash was so intense that Steam reviews for the expansion settled at a "Mostly Negative" average. But once the initial dissatisfaction began to fade away, players were increasingly complimentary of what Lightfall, as an entire package, had to offer. Others maintained hope that the raid, due to arrive at a later date so that Guardians could gear up sufficiently, would provide compelling lore and encounters.

Despite some criticizing the Root of Nightmares for its comparatively short length and reliance on a single type of mechanic, the raid was met with an ostensibly positive sentiment. Since the raid launched, Destiny 2 content creator TheSnazzzyRock has been attempting to complete certain encounters with just one other guardian or solo. For context, raids in Destiny 2 are some of the most difficult and complex content available, balanced for six players, and can be seemingly impossible without at least two people. Although Nezarec, Final God of Pain may be considered less mechanically complex than other Destiny bosses, that does not detract from how difficult defeating him alone is, a challenge now completed by TheSnazzzyRock.

The achievement is showcased in a YouTube video posted by TheSnazzzyRock, with the successful attempt taking just under 12 minutes to complete. A brief description underneath the video explains just how essential certain loadouts, ammo availability, and weapon perks are to solo the encounter. The beginning of the fight plays out very similarly to a normal run, mechanically speaking, but sees TheSnazzzyRock utilize an optimized build to deal with the constantly spawning enemies. An arm Exotic called Sunbracers is used to handle the hoards of aggressive Cabal flooding the arena, which extend the duration of Solar Grenades - indiscriminately burning up Cabal nearby while the focus is on Nezarec.

There is a certain corner of the arena in which Guardians are seemingly protected from the vast majority of potential threats when Nezarec is chasing players. From this likely unintentional safety zone, most of the damage is dished out, blasting the Final God of Pain with as many rockets as possible. After repeating the process three times, the final DPS phase is reached, and it is at this point that TheSnazzzyRock's prior composure is broken. The kill-or-be-killed stand-off concludes with Nezarec hilariously flying backward, no doubt too embarrassed by being defeated solo to even have a proper death animation. TheSnazzzyRock immediately breaks into impassioned cries of jubilation, certainly warranted following the impressive feat.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
