Destiny 2's Lightfall trailer recently released, with a full showcase discussing the future story expansion and what it means for the Destiny 2 universe in a saga between the Light and Darkness. Lightfall will take players to the Neptunian city Neomuna, a secret location since the Collapse where alternate humans have been hiding. Neomuna is a giant metropolis that's pristine and newer than previous sites.

Players within Neomuna will meet the Cloud Striders; warriors considered to be the opposite of Guardians who voluntarily choose to defend Neptune. While not much else has been revealed about Neptune or its capital city, its neon and cyberpunk aesthetic brings to mind Night City from Cyberpunk 2077. While the two storylines are vastly different, Neomuna could still be Destiny 2's take on a cyberpunk city.

Night City and Neomuna as City-States

Destiny 2 Neptune and Neomuna

Night City in Cyberpunk 2077 has a rich history and an isolationist mentality that defines its remote location bordering North and South California. Like Neomuna, the cyberpunk city represents a giant metropolis, the center of culture and life for its inhabitants. In Cyberpunk 2077, Free States exist within the New United States of America that have their autonomy, and Night City is such a place.

While Neomuna is located on Neptune and not Earth, its location has been hidden until now. Surviving with alternate humans since The Collapse, this civilization has grown in strange ways compared to the rest of humanity. With this operation, Neptune and Neomuna exist as a city-state, having a ruling government unaware of any other in the Sol system.

Corporate Presence and Robotic Implants in Destiny 2 and Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077's Night City is owned and dominated by corporations, with a corporate-controlled city council and a Democratic mayor. The City Center is one of the busiest and most illustrious places where corporations are showcased with giant, sleek skyscrapers. If Destiny 2 means to mirror Night City with Neomuna somehow, corporate influence may thrive on Neptune similarly. With the bits of lore that fans are privy to, it may have taken corporate power and money to hide such a civilization despite its widespread advancements. As Destiny 2 has shown through Bray Technologies, ruling out corporate influence here may be premature.

One of the prominent aspects of Night City in Cyberpunk 2077 was that humanity had reached a level of cybernetic and robotic enhancements that they could replace body parts even for cosmetic reasons. Called Enhancements or Body Mods, the game allows players to obtain, swap, build, and mod such features as part of its combat.

Destiny 2 lore has discussed Exos, which are mechanical bodies that humans built during the species' Golden Age. All Exos were humans at one point before their brains were uploaded into the artificial bodies. Since players have learned that Neptune will have a race of alternate humans in advanced technological stages, it stands to reason that robotics or nanotechnology will be used to augment these people.

Destiny 2's Lightfall expansion has revealed little about the vibrant cityscape to explore in Neptune's capital city, but players may quickly imagine Night City from Cyberpunk 2077 given the aesthetic properties for both locations stand out. How Neomuna functions has not been revealed just yet, but when Neptune becomes explorable in 2023, the beginning of the end has arrived.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
