As part of the first Curse of Osiris DLC reveal stream, developer Bungie gave Destiny 2 fans their first look at the new content coming in early December. Principal among those was the reveal of the “new raid content” that players have been so curious about.

There has been a lot of debate about what raid content means for Destiny 2, but now we know. Curse of Osiris will add a new raid-like encounter called a Raid Lair. This Raid Lair, named Leviathan, Eater of Worlds, will send players back into Leviathan and into the “belly of the beast.” According to Bungie, the encounter will take place below Calus’ Palace, which suggests a more mechanical aesthetic.

Most importantly, the Raid Lair will feature new gear to collect and an increase in power level. That being said, Bungie is not raising the recommended power level for the base encounter; that will remain at 300. However, there will be a Prestige difficulty version, which should be much more difficult.

As with past raid releases, Leviathan, Eater of Worlds will not launch alongside the Curse of Osiris DLC. However, we don’t expect Bungie to wait as long before flipping the switch and letting Destiny 2 fireteams vie for World’s First. Most likely the Raid Lair will go live on Friday, December 8th.

Of course, Bungie wouldn’t say too much about the new Raid Lair, but the developers did promise that it would be challenging and that players will die a lot. While the main encounters in Leviathan are very mechanics-based, it’s possible that this second “raid” will put the focus on gun skill, something that many Destiny 2 players have been asking Bungie to deliver. It would be a smart way to deliver the best of both worlds, even if players have to pay for DLC in order to get it. The good news, though, is that Destiny 2 players do not need a Leviathan raid completion in order to access this new content.

Although players were concerned that Destiny 2 might not add another raid until the launch of Year 2 next September, it appears that Bungie has found an interesting middle ground for expanding raid content. Granted, this won’t be an entirely new raid but it apparently will offer players an appropriate endgame challenge and loot for succeeding. Whether or not this Raid Lair will feel as substantial as a raid, however, is yet to be determined.

Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris releases December 5, 2017 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
