Destiny 2 players are in for some surprising changes according to recent leaks about the upcoming "Season of the Deep," which is expected to drop some time towards the end of May this year as the second season for the Lightfall expansion. There has been much rumor and speculation surrounding the upcoming season, with one leaker suggesting that Destiny 2 will return to Titan, the Saturnian moon that was removed from the game some time ago.

Bungie has seemingly had its hands full since the latest expansion; Destiny 2 servers have been taken down for planned maintenance and hotfixes at least once since Lightfall released at the end of February this year. Several other tweaks and hotfixes have been implemented aimed at stomping out pesky bugs and improving the game's balance, albeit with varying levels of success.

According to Freezing Dart of Destiny News Network, players can expect a massive overhaul to the Destiny 2 Power system. The leaker said that they were unsure if this change would feature as part of Season of the Deep, going on to describe how the new system would work. Instead of power being character-based, it will be account-based and shared with the player's fireteam applying the highest level to all participants. Gear score will be removed, with players being required to complete weekly or seasonal challenges to accumulate power, while also enabling players to use gear that had been sunsetted. Freezing Dart explained that one of the tag lines for the upcoming overhaul is "Use all your gear, all the time" indicating that Destiny 2 players would no longer be required to retire their gear every so often.

It will be interesting to see how the wider community reacts if these apparent upcoming changes come to fruition. Responses to the BungieLeaks tweet regarding these apparent changes range from outright disbelief on the matter of sunset weapons to cautious optimism at the possibility of long forgotten equipment becoming relevant again. The thread continues with some details about apparent reworks of existing Destiny 2 exotics for Season 21 and beyond. Only time will tell if these changes come to pass.

In the interim it seems that Bungie is hard at work addressing some balance issues in Destiny 2 as players have pointed out that only SMG class weapons remain viable in endgame scenarios. It could be that a complete overhaul of the power system is necessary to achieve the much-needed balance across primary weapon classes, lending some credibility to the leaks from Freezing Dart. Fans should take this information with a grain of salt for now, however.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
