Since the arrival of Destiny all the way back in 2014, the entity known as Darkness has been an ever present threat to players even though it has only just started slowly revealing itself recently. Things may be coming to a head however as players discovered that the Darkness ships have begun entering the solar system, slowly approaching as Season of the Worthy rolls forward. This arrival also seems to indicate an all new direction for Destiny 2, if the most recent leak is to be believed.

A new leak originating on 4Chan made its way over to Sweatcicle, someone who's a well respected member of the Destiny 2 community. According to the information, most of the studio has since transitioned to the big fall expansion for Destiny 2 known as Collapse. The content was originally part of Destiny 3, but has since been retooled and broken off as a standalone expansion.

In terms of content, the expansion will deal with the Pyramid Ships finally arriving and setting the Darkness up as the big villain with a leader known as the Winnower and appearing like a ghostly and veiled woman similar to what was shown inside the Shadowkeep's Pyramid Ship. Two new destinations are being added with one being Europa, another of Jupiter's moons, as well as a massive city inside the Darkness ship called Finality.

Emperor Calus, Eris Morn, and Mara Sov all look to be major players in the story line of the expansion and each class will gain a Darkness subclass with all new abilities. Players will be fighting off a new faction called the Veil, which are described as ghostly looking and have the most new units out of all enemy factions. The expansion will have a new raid that takes players into the Winnower's Domain, will be adding new strikes, and the leak also indicates that Bungie will be revealing it sometime in June, a date that aligns with last year's reveal of Shadowkeep.

Obviously, the validity of this leak has to be called into question considering the source and the fact that Bungie has yet to say anything on its future plans for Destiny 2 outside of continued seasonal content. However, more than a few of the details does seem to line up with things fans have heard in the past. Not only that, considering how light Season of the Worthy seems to be would be explained by a smaller team being left in charge while the rest of the studio works on the next major aspect to Destiny as well as Bungie's other new IP known as Matter.

As players discovered last week, the Darkness does appear to be coming so any future content would conceivably contain the mysterious force. Naturally, holding the major antagonist for a brand new game would have been the likely path but considering the delays and shifting timelines that Bungie has experienced after its split with Activision, things have changed. Destiny 3 has been pushed out which makes it plausible that content normally reserved for Destiny 3 would be broken off as a standalone expansion for the Fall.

The comments on the Tweet has seemingly left the fanbase split over its validity. Some are hoping that at least a portion of this supposed leak is true as the game is currently in the middle of a major down swing with fans. Players are quickly burning out or becoming bored with the experience as they struggle with playing through the same content over and over without much in the way of new rewards or things to chase. In fact, things have gotten so dire that even major Destiny 2 streamers like Gladd are starting to turn away from the game. Even if this leak isn't the future of Destiny 2, Bungie's going to need to pull an ace out of its sleeve to bring fans back.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
