Since lending his voice to Zavala starting in Destiny 1, actor Lance Reddick has become an icon to fans. While other voice actors have fallen by the wayside, or been killed off, or, in the case of Peter Dinklage, replaced, Reddick has been a stalwart piece of the Destiny puzzle from the very beginning.
So, it only makes sense then that Reddick is keeping up with his Destiny voice work, even with the current situation being what it is. The actor even shared a clip of his makeshift recording studio in a brief video on Twitter.
Unfortunately, Reddick doesn’t offer any information about what he is recording, but it’s safe to assume that it is for the next season (number 11) of content in Destiny 2. Datamines notwithstanding, it’s very likely that Bungie has already completed the necessary work for Season 10, or at least all that the developers need Lance Reddick for.
While the character sometimes takes a backseat to some other prominent figures in Destiny lore, Zavala has been an important piece of the narrative for Season of the Worthy. He, along with Ana Bray and the Warmind Rasputin, are working to stop the Cabal’s Red Legion from causing the Almighty ship to fall from the sky and destroy the Traveler. Players still haven’t seen everything come together so it’s presumed that Zavala will have more to say and do before the season ends, but whether Reddick is recording for that is unclear.
Although, if Bungie already has Season 11 “in the can,” Reddick could be doing voice work for the next big fall expansion, which director Luke Smith says players are not ready for. Most fans expect that the next expansion will center on the arrival of the Darkness and in that case, it will be all hands-on deck for the key Destiny players including Zavala. We wouldn’t even be surprised to see Zavala once again lead the charge (or at least tell Guardians what to do) in fighting back the Darkness.
As if Reddick sharing a fun update with fans wasn’t enough, The Wire and Fringe actor also indulged in the most popular Zavala meme by referencing his opening dialogue to the Cerberus Vae III strike from Destiny 1. Many Destiny fans like to slip the “Whether we wanted it or not…” line into casual conversation as a "gacha"-style seque after first talking about something completely unrelated. It’s something that started out as an annoyance because of how frequently players would hear it while loading into the Strike. But then it became part of a joke that the community would regularly “trick” each other with. And now it has ascended to a new status thanks to Lance Reddick.
