The launch of Destiny 2's Forsaken expansion is just days away, and developer Bungie is offering a warning about infusing new higher level gear into old Year 1 weapons and armor. Remember, Bungie is allowing all the weapons and armor from Year 1 to carry over into this expansion and the game's second year with the ability to infuse it bringing it up to new power levels.

When Forsaken launches on September 4, Destiny 2 players will be able to start taking their level beyond the current cap. But as higher level gear begins to drop for players, they should be aware that they could potentially lock themselves out of their Year 1 gear if they aren't paying attention during infusion.

Destiny 2 Forsaken weapon slot system reason

As has been the case with previous expansions as, gear with higher Power level has a required character level to equip it. This presents itself as gear that is greyed out and has a red "Level x required" tool tip. Bungie warns that if players take a piece of gear that is locked out due to the character level requirement and infuse that into an existing Year 1 weapon or armor, that Year 1 gear will subsequently become locked with the same character level requirement as the previous piece of gear. So, for example, if a player infused a power level 410 weapon into their Better Devils, they may need to hit level 32 in order to use the hand cannon again.

As players make the long climb to Destiny 2's new Power level and character level caps of 600 and 50, respectively, they'll need to be paying attention to the level requirements of the new gear that drops, especially if they are looking to infuse it into another item. Another thing to consider as well is running that gear across multiple alternate characters, because if players infuse their Year 1 gear to higher levels, it will become unavailable for use on any alternate characters until they hit the level requirement.
