A new season of Destiny 2 brings with it plenty of new content to dig into, and Season of the Deep will be sending players to a new dungeon which now has a name thanks to Bungie's latest weekly update. Dungeons and raids are given names which hint as to what players can expect to see along with any potential narrative implications, with two clear examples being the Vow of the Disciple raid and the dungeon Prophecy. The latest addition continues this trend, playing directly off the name of the current season as a potential clue as to what threat Guardians will need to defeat.

Season of the Deep is the current season of content for Destiny 2, picking up after the end of the Lightfall campaign and Season of Defiance. Players find themselves venturing back to the moon Titan after receiving a distress message from Deputy Commander Sloane, who vanished along with Titan at the end of Season of Arrivals. Guardians are tasked with helping Sloane defend a mysterious creature living beneath the waves of Titan's methane oceans with the hope of it providing some answers on what the Witness' ultimate goal is and how it can be stopped.

While the dungeon is set to go live on Friday, May 26, Bungie took the chance to give players the first official taste of what is awaiting them by revealing its name inside the latest This Week at Bungie post. The dungeon is titled Ghosts of the Deep, setting the stage for one of the more potentially ominous endgame activities Guardians have experienced in quite some time. Aside from a short outline of start dates for select activities in Season of the Deep, such as Iron Banner and Solstice, no other information about the dungeon was given at the time of writing.

The lack of information hasn't stopped some players in the Destiny 2 community from speculating about what the dungeon's title could mean. A common theory is the title has two meanings as it will take players deep beneath the surface of Titan's oceans, but could be centered on the Hive since "The Deep" is their name for the Darkness. Some players feel the involvement of Xivu Arath in Season of the Deep only validates this idea as this is the first time in-game she is directly communicating with players.

As for what the possible ghosts residing in this dungeon may be, a popular idea is that it could tie back to Oryx in some way. The former Taken King's body was last seen floating around Saturn after his defeat in the King's Fall raid, and it has been widely speculated by players his remains could have found their way to Titan since it is Saturn's biggest moon. It remains to be seen if any of this proves accurate or is just wild speculation, but it would mark a full-circle moment for one of the guardians' greatest foes as the Light and Darkness Saga nears its end.

Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
