Among the many new features and activities coming to Destiny 2 with the Forsaken expansion, the most anticipated is arguably the Gambit mode. Best described as competitive PvE, Gambit pits two teams of four against each other in a battle against different types of enemies to see who can defeat a final boss first.

When Forsaken launches in early September, Destiny 2 players will be able to finally see what all of the excitement surrounding Gambit is about, at any time they like. But that wasn’t always the case. At one point during Gambit’s development, Bungie envisioned the mode as a Trials-like experience where players would need to enter as pre-made, 4-player fireteams.

In an offhand Twitter interaction, Bungie Design Lead Lars Bakken shared a small detail from Gambit’s early days of development. When a fan asked whether there were plans to include a Trials-like version of Gambit, Bakken revealed that Bungie did consider such an idea but eventually the team decided to offer the mode with matchmaking to ensure everyone could experience it.

Bakken wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Gambit offering a version that feels more like Trials of the Nine, though, but no such offering will be available when Forsaken launches. For now, players will simply get to experience the mode as it was designed and presumably Bungie will make changes based on how the community responds.

While a Trials-esque version of Gambit could be cool, it’s a little premature to invest so heavily in the mode. Yes, after going hands-on with the mode, it’s safe to say Gambit is one of the best non-raid experiences that Bungie has created, but that perception is based on a small sample. Who is to say that Gambit will be as exciting after the 10th or 50th time through?

Not to mention, adding an even more competitive element has the chance to paint Gambit in a completely different light. If there is a lack of balance in PvE, which is very possible given Forsaken is bringing back random weapon perk rolls, then a more competitive version of Gambit may be perceived as unfair. If the experience is more casual then Bungie doesn’t need to worry too much about stronger PvE teams being capable of dominating the mode.
