The mysterious “new mode” coming in Destiny 2’s September expansion, Forsaken, that has been hinted at and teased has finally been revealed. It’s called Gambit, and it’s a combination of both PvE and PvP modes into something new for thefranchise.

Destiny 2’s new Gambit activity is a 4v4 mode where each team of four is separated in their own arena where PvE enemies spawn. The ultimate goal is to summon a Primeval, basically a boss character and defeat it and thus ending the competition. But to summon a Primeval, teams will need to kill enemies and collect Motes that drop from those enemies.

Players can collect and hold up to 15 Motes at a time, but if they die they will lose them. Players can bank the Motes into a central structure on their side of the map. Banking 5, 10, or 15 Motes at a time will block the other team’s bank so they are unable to deposit their Motes. In addition, when teams reach the tiers of 25 and 50 Motes banked, a portal will open and one player can transport over to the other team’s side and try to defeat them in PvP combat. The first team to bank 75 Motes will summon the final Primeval boss, and defeating it will end the match.

destiny 2 gambit announced

Gambit looks to be a unique mixture of PvE and PvP that will hopefully continue to give players something to do well after the launch of Forsaken in September. Bungie said that Gambit will have its own node on the Director screen, sitting aside other activities like Crucible and Strikes.

Gambit will be playable next week on the show floor at E3 at the Activision booth, and it will also be playable at the fan-organized GuardianCon event in Tampa, Florida in July. Bungie confirmed this is the mode that fans play tested during the Bungie Community Summit in April. However, those who played it are still under NDA and cannot share impressions of the mode until E3.

Destiny 2: Forsaken will be released this September for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
