Destiny 2: Forsaken Won't Launch With Private Matches for Gambit

Players who jump into Forsaken, Destiny 2’s fall expansion, will have a new game mode to tangle with called Gambit. Previously, developer Bungie has said that this new hybrid mode that mashes together the PvE and PvP sides of Destiny 2 will be its own game mode with its own node on the Director; it won’t be a part of the Crucible. It looks like that fact will also preclude Gambit from having the option to create private matches.

Bungie Design Lead Lars Bakken took to Twitter to say that private matches for Gambit will not be in the game at Forsaken’s launch in September, but he says Bungie is looking into adding it in the future:

This may disappoint some fans, particularly those who may have hoped to set up Gambit matches between friends or in a tournament-type setting. But as for Gambit, when it launches the main playlist will feature matchmaking so anyone from solo players to groups will be able to jump in.

And if the past is any assurance, determined players will find a way to trick Gambit’s matchmaking to pair them with exactly who they want to, just as they have done ever since the early days of Destiny 1’s Crucible and even now with Warmind’s Escalation Protocol activity.

As mentioned, Gambit is a PvE/PvP hybrid mode where two teams of four face off against PvE enemies in adjacent arenas. Killing enemies grant Motes that can be banked at a central terminal on the map. Banking 5, 10, or 15 Motes will cause powerful Blocker enemies to spawn on the other team’s side of the map to slow them down. At 25 and 50 Motes collected, players will also be able to invade the other team’s side of the arena to try to wipe out the opposing team in PvP action (which also includes level advantages enabled). It all comes with tge Forsaken DLC this fall.

Destiny 2: Forsaken releases on September 4, 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
