A recent addition to Destiny 2’s emblem collection suggests the game may soon add a free trial for players. The emblem, which is called Mentor of Light, only just appeared in Destiny 2 and has prompted plenty of speculation.

Since Bungie has not officially announced a Destiny 2 trial it is unclear how substantial this offering will be. Back around the time Destiny 1 first launched, Bungie released a trial for players that functioned a lot like the game’s beta, unlocking the bulk of Earth’s content as a type of demo.

While that seems like a potential path for Destiny 2’s trial, the emblem suggests this will be more substantial than that. According to the emblem’s description, trial players will have access to at least a few story missions and some Crucible modes. And any who help these 'Trial Players' will unlock Mentor of Light.

Given that description, it’s safe to assume that the Destiny 2 trial, whenever it releases, will include a handful of campaign missions and access to the Crucible.

Perhaps, like the Destiny 1 trial, players will gain access to the early story missions on Earth and the European Dead Zone. However, we would much rather see the trial expand beyond that to show players what new destinations like Titan and Nessus can offer. The EDZ is a unique patrol area and is much bigger than Destiny 1’s Earth patrol area, but it doesn’t highlight the ways Destiny 2 expands on the franchise’s art style.

Chances are if Bungie is planning to unveil a trial for Destiny 2 then it will likely launch around the time Curse of Osiris releases, which is on December 5th. While all of the veteran players are returning to see what the first DLC expansion offers, other curious players could jump in for a small taste of Destiny 2.

It’s also important to point out that Bungie later added a Refer-a-Friend program for Destiny 1 that encouraged players to convince their friends to buy the game and then rewarded them for playing together. By completing missions and tasks within Destiny 1, the two friends could earn a couple emotes, emblems, and even a unique sword. It doesn’t sound like this initial trial will be as involved, but a future program might be.

Destiny 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
