When the Forsaken expansion launches for Destiny 2, players will have a lot more reasons to return to the game on a daily basis. Bungie wants to get back to the rituals of the original Destiny while also creating a grind that is meaningful.

One of the ways that Bungie hopes to achieve this is through the new armor perks, which will launch with Destiny 2: Forsaken. Essentially, Destiny 2 will offer a revamped version of the armor perks seen in the first game, while also letting players upgrade those perks as they go.

During a lengthy Q&A, Steve Cotton and Scott Taylor revealed how armor perks will work in Destiny 2. Each armor piece will carry two perks, one for abilities and one for ammo economy. So, for example, a chest piece might offer faster melee recharge and more hand cannon ammo. A new perk mentioned was grenade throw distance, but it’s unclear how diverse these ability-based perks can get.

Moreover, players can take the stats on the armor and upgrade them up to 10 times. Upgrading the perk for the 10th time will turn the armor piece into a Masterwork.

We also know thanks to a prior reveal by Bungie that armor mods in Destiny 2: Forsaken will offer more variety. Since it seems as though the perks tied to Year 1 mods are becoming base armor perks, there are new perks on the way for Year 2 mods. One of the ones mentioned previously is a mod that will boost in- air accuracy, something that Destiny 2 players have been asking for from Bungie for a while.

On its face, the armor perk system seems to support the idea that players will have more ways to customize their build and more things to grind for. Whereas before, armor didn’t really matter outside of the Recovery stat, in Year 2 players will spend more time looking at the perks on armor. And if they want to look a certain way, there will be a fair amount of grinding necessary to get everything perfect.
