The Forerunner exotic sidearm is now available in Destiny 2, and players can obtain it by completing the Magnum Opus questline. While the Forerunner is quite powerful by default, fans can improve its abilities further by unlocking its catalyst. Players that are looking for details on how that is done, or simply want to know more about exactly what the Forerunner catalyst in Destiny 2 does, can find all of that information in this guide.

Updated on February 9, 2022, by Anastasia Maillot: The Forerunner may not be a meta weapon in Destiny 2, but many players have still aspired to get their hands on the weapon following the 30th Anniversary update. Like many things in Destiny 2, getting the Forerunner's catalyst, however, is a very long and grindy process that involves Dares of Eternity and Xur. Since last time, more information has come out on how to complete this questline and finalize the Forerunner in all of its glory. Here's how to fully complete the Magnum Opus questline and unlock the Forerunner's catalyst.

Destiny 2 Xur Anomalous Access Card

The following conditions need to be met for the player to be able to unlock the catalyst for the Forerunner:

  • Attain Rank 16 with Xur
  • Obtain the Anomalous Access Card from Xur
  • Complete the quest Magnum Opus II

In order to obtain the Forerunner catalyst, players need to reach Rank 16 with Xur, who can be found in his Treasure Hoard on Eternity. This means that players that are looking to improve their Forerunners will need to spend quite a bit of time in Destiny 2’s Dares of Eternity activity. Make sure to pick up Starhorse bounties when grinding this game mode, for increased XP and gear rewards in the form of Paraversal Hauls.

It is at that rank that players will be able to obtain the Anomalous Access Card from Xur, which will unlock a brand-new quest related to the Forerunner, titled Magnus Opus II. This quest requires players to complete the Dares of Eternity activity on Legend difficulty, with an outstanding score of 225,000 points or more.

After this, players will need to visit Banshee-44, who will reward them the Forerunner catalyst.

Destiny 2 Forerunner Catalyst Description

Receiving the catalyst from Banshee-44 is one thing, but actually applying it on the Forerunner requires players to unlock it. In order to do so, players will need to score 700 eliminations with the Forerunner in Destiny 2.

Using it in Dares of Eternity is a good way to farm kills fast, but completing Altars of Sorrow on the Moon if players have the Shadowkeep expansion is also efficient. Some players also recommend loading up the Shuro-Chi encounter from the Last Wish raid, which features tons of Taken enemies for players to farm just about any weapon catalyst they want.

Destiny 2: What Does The Forerunner Catalyst Do

Destiny 2 Hunter With The Forerunner Exotic Sidearm

The Forerunner catalyst bestows a unique perk upon the exotic sidearm, which is called the Rock. This perk allows players to consume part of their ammo reserves in order to turn their next thrown grenade into a fragmentation grenade, though it can only be activated for a short time after dealing a final blow. Destiny 2 fans that are curious can see this in action at the beginning of the video that is above.

For those players that were unaware, the Forerunner sidearm is inspired by the magnum from Halo, and the Rock perk is undoubtedly a reference to the frag grenades that are featured in that legendary series.

While that does not change anything about the functionality of the Forerunner catalyst, its association with Halo may help keep fans motivated. Indeed, earning the Anomalous Access Card is quite a grind, and players that are working toward it will need both patience and persistence.

Though the Forerunner is by no means a popular weapon in PvP or PvE, players can still make great use of it if they enjoy a niche playstyle in Destiny 2. Bungie recently buffed the Forerunner's ammo pick-up rate. Now, players are able to pick up three bricks of Special ammo instead of the traditional two.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
