The recent reveal of an upcoming expansion for Destiny 2 has many fans excited to pick apart everything that has been showcased to see what the game will have to offer in future seasons. However, some fans have started to focus more closely on the logo shown off during Destiny 2: Lightfall's reveal trailer, and seeing how it might compare to a recent Disney film.
This latest comparison for the upcoming expansion picks out Disney's Lightyear, which many fans have noticed has a similar looking logo to what Bungie showed at the Lightfall reveal. Interestingly, the similarities are a step more than skin deep on some of these comparisons, although this might be closer to an example of an ongoing media trend, rather than Destiny 2 trying to replicate Lightyear's logo.
The specific comparisons that fans have started to show off with the Lightyear and Lightfall logos is how at first glance, each appears to be using the same bold font with a horizontal line slicing through the top third of both titles. However, the visual similarities don't stop with the stylized font, as both are seemingly the same color and sit as bold, white text over a dark background. Of course, bold, white text isn't anything new for science fiction fonts, even from before the Destiny 2: Lightfall release date was announced, and players have been speculating on what the title might mean.
Some fans have also pointed out that the bold text with a line through the top third has appeared in other movies and games within the last few years. One notable example of this style of logo comes from 2017's Blade Runner 2049, which draws its own font from the original Blade Runner logo from 1982. So, as opposed to Bungie simply seeing the Lightyear logo and wanting to make something similar, this actually draws from a long, ongoing trend from the last forty years of science fiction media, something that has been a theme for Destiny 2's complete saga.
A logo design like this new one for Destiny 2: Lightfall can be deceptively complicated, as developers try to make sure that their title stands out from the crowd, but also conveys what a game might be comparable to. In the case of the similarities between Lightfall and Lightyear, this likely isn't pointing at the stories or themes being all too similar, especially with how much darker the Destiny series' lore can get than most things made by Disney. That being said, the similarities are uncanny, which makes it perfect material for fans to start comparing, mocking up edits, and sharing online.
