Update January 17th: Bungie confirms it is not a bug. The new weapons will be added for Season 2 over time.

It seems that Destiny 2’s player base can’t catch a break when it comes to the latest Faction Rally event. First, Bungie nerfed the best farming method for Faction tokens and now players are noticing that there are only one or two new weapons in the loot pool this time around. Which is surprising considering a previous datamine revealed that there was a handful of new Faction weapons (for each Faction) added to the Destiny 2 database.

Currently, it’s unclear if the problem is a bug or it is by design, but Destiny 2 players are noting that the only new weapon dropping from the Faction Rally is a sidearm. There are new rewards for each of the three Factions when one wins the event, but as far as engram loot the sidearm is the only confirmed drop. Everything else is from the old loot pools, including rewards from past Faction Rally events.

While we don’t know why Bungie decided not to add any of the new weapons to the loot pool, some believe it is tied to the new Curse of Osiris DLC. If you remember, Bungie originally separated its events and activities based on whether players owned the Curse of Osiris DLC or not. So the Faction Rally and Iron Banner were not going to be available to players that didn’t own the DLC.

The developer quickly backtracked on that plan and today added a patch that gave all players access to the Faction Rally and Iron Banner next week, but it could have made an additional change as well. Since the new Faction Rally loot in the Destiny 2 database has a Curse of Osiris icon these items could be locked behind the DLC paywall. And rather than face another backlash, Bungie decided to remove them from the loot pool, either temporarily or permanently.

Unfortunately, what this does is remove all of the incentives for players to complete the Faction Rally event for Season 2. In terms of new items, there is the sidearm to collect, the rewards from past Faction Rallies, and completing the various activities for the new armor ornaments. But if you own all the armor and the weapons you want, then this Faction Rally is far less appealing.

As we mentioned, it’s unclear if this is a bug or an intentional choice by Bungie, but either way the studio should address it so players know what’s going on. It could be bad RNG, but it seems more likely that those previously leaked Faction Rally weapons are just not in the loot pools.

Destiny 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
