Destiny 2 is a free multiplayer first-person shooter released back in 2017 by Bungie. However, despite the game being 4 years old, players are still finding unique bugs to exploit for gear farming. While some game bugs can be hilarious, this new glitch has the potential to be game changing.

Farming gear is a key part of the Destiny 2 gameplay loop. Players are exposed to new and unique gear as they increase their “power level.” The new gear’s stat boosts then increase players' chances of winning future matches. There are 5 tiers of equipment in Destiny 2: white, green, blue, purple and gold. Gold drops are considered to be exotic. The gold class items available rotate daily based on when the item is dropped, rather than when it is opened. The game also had a drop system featuring an item called an “engram” these can be “decoded” and transformed into equipment of the same color type as the engram.

A Reddit user by the name of u/Mr_Regulator23 has discovered a new exploit which allows players to obtain the specific gold class item they desire. In an online post, the user states the requirements of exploiting this bug: the player must have their engrams fully stocked, and must receive an exotic item drop. Mr_Regulator23 claimed that when these requirements were met and he farmed Destiny 2's exotic items, he was able to control what they returned as.

When opened the day after, all 5 items farmed by Mr_Regulator23 were revealed to be the exotic item available the day they were opened, not the day they were farmed. The user added one caveat: players should ensure the items they are farming are actually exotic engrams, and not “enhancement cores” which are occasionally displayed as exotic but are not.

Destiny 2 is no stranger to bugs and it is likely that this phenomenon is occurring due to the way the game was programmed. If the daily characteristics are applied to the exotic item only upon pick up, the user’s claim makes sense. Some are stating that the bug does not work for them, however.

If the bug is real, it could turn out to be game changing for many users until it is patched by Bungie. It is expected that the bug will not last long before it is fixed, though. The online only nature of the game also means it will not be possible for users to exploit the bug offline after it is patched.

While many are thrilled, there may be some users who see exploiting these bugs as a way of cheating. One of the sad truths of multiplayer games is that as a player increases their chances of winning, they are also decreasing the chances for their opponent.
