Next week will be the first Iron Banner of Destiny 2 Year 2 and with it comes a number of changes. Bungie is looking to make Iron Banner feel a little more like it did in Destiny 1 by giving players more rewards, more ways to earn those rewards and increase the challenge of the PvP event.

It starts first with the power level advantage, which will be turned on for the first time in Destiny 2’s history. Players will do more damage (and survive more damage) based on their power level.

Now it behooves players to consider their loadouts in new ways by making sure no piece of gear is holding them back. It also means those that have put less effort into the power level grind to 600 will be at a disadvantage, but likely not by too much.

The reward system revamps for Iron Banner focus on giving players more ways to earn gear. Lord Saladin will offer bounties that reward gear and two of the bounties will feature powerful rewards. Saladin will also have armor and weapons for direct purchase, which will be unlocked by completing their associated bounty.

But most importantly, end of match drops are back. Players will now earn Iron Banner gear simply by playing and without worrying about bounties or direct purchase. These armor and weapons will also feature random perk rolls, making Iron Banner its own grind.

It may have taken a whole year to get there but Iron Banner is finally starting to take a shape that resembles the event from Destiny 1. Admittedly, the power leveling that used to come from Iron Banner has been diminished, but there are more incentives to interact with the event without worrying about wins and losses. Direct purchases and end of match drops should ensure that players that complete a lot of Iron Banner matches come away with a lot of Iron Banner gear, which is how it should have always been.

Destiny 2: Forsaken is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
