This week, Bungie is giving Destiny 2 fans their first taste of Curse of Osiris, the upcoming DLC expansion for the highly anticipated sequel. But most of the promotional material has focused on big-picture items, like the story, new characters, and new content.

Even so, Destiny 2 fans should rest assured that Bungie is offering a complete experience with Curse of Osiris, which means an increase to the level cap and the power level cap. On December 5th, the level cap will rise to 25 and the power level cap will jump to 330.

While most Destiny 2 players expected Bungie to raise the power level cap, it comes as somewhat of a surprise that the level cap is rising as well. But, if it keeps players engaged with the content for longer, it’s in Bungie’s best interest to boost as many caps as possible.

Although the power level cap will rise to 330, most assume that the real cap will be 335 with legendary mods on every piece of gear. Legendary mods carry a +5 defense or attack stat and increase the power level of an item. The +5 stat doesn’t affect leveling, as gear will still look at a player’s power level without mods to determine drops, but it does help survivability.

Although Bungie is willing to reveal the new level and power level caps for Curse of Osiris, the studio won’t discuss the specifics of leveling. It’s safe to assume that hitting level 25 will merely be a matter of accumulating XP, but the power level is an entirely different goal.

Chances are the release of DLC 1 will raise the base power level for rare and legendary gear, but by how much? Will anything but powerful gear go above 300, or will players be forced to complete Milestones to reach the new power level cap?

While there have been plenty of complaints about Destiny 2 in the endgame, most would agree that the initial grind was satisfying and rewarding. Yes, some players found that Public Events were the best way to level up and focused on those, but increasing one’s level up to 265 was addicting. Hopefully, Curse of Osiris can recreate that feeling and build off of it.
