There are matchmaking changes on the way for Destiny 2's Competitive playlist in the Crucible. Destiny 2's developer, Bungie, says the change will go into effect upon the next weekly reset on January 15 at 10 a.m. PST. The changes come amidst a pretty long period of player complaints about how matchmaking in Competitive is currently working.

The new matchmaking criteria will be much more weighted to finding teams that are of similar Glory rank. A common complaint among players is getting matched against fully-stacked teams that are at a dramatically higher Glory rank, especially as players first enter into Competitive to chase some of the mode's pinnacle weapons. Right now, Competitive is using skill-based matchmaking and seems to be heavily weighting similarly-skilled teams or players against one another. Alternatively from totally lopsided matchmaking, sometimes the system can keep matching the same teams over and over again based on its current search criteria.

Bungie says that imbalanced matches aren't going to go away completely, but the developer believes their occurrence will be reduced dramatically. The downside is that with this Glory-based matchmaking, players will likely experience longer matchmaking times. There's often a push-and-pull of matchmaking with faster matchmaking often casting a wider net and thus resulting in potential blowout matches, while matchmaking with more even-skilled teams can take much longer to match.

According to Bungie, this change came from a combination of player feedback and data that the developers are seeing on their end. Bungie is encouraging players to continue to sound off after the matchmaking changes go live to continue to help improve matchmaking in Competitive.

Along with announcing this change to matchmaking in Competitive, Bungie also previewed a number of changes coming to the supers in Destiny 2, with many of the skill trees getting a buff and a change to the challenging Niobe Labs puzzle.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
