Bungie remains hard at work continuing the development of Destiny 2, rolling out seasonal content while also focusing on major expansions. Currently, Bungie is working towards the release of The Witch Queen in 2022. However, Bungie's also confirmed the development of an expansion to follow The Witch Queen named Lightfall. What comes after Lightfall remains to be revealed, but as Bungie Design Director Jacob Benton makes clears, what is certain is that there will be more.

Speaking to Japanese outlet 4gamer, Benton discussed the current state of Destiny 2 as well as what's coming next. In his responses, Benton says that the eventual release of Lightfall is unlikely to completely wrap up the story that Destiny 2 is telling. As such, it makes sense for there to be further content released for Destiny 2 even beyond Lightfall. The context of the response implies that at least one more major expansion would follow Lightfall's eventual release.

What Benton's response was also clarifying is where Bungie currently stands on the potential development of Destiny 3. Benton says that it doesn't make sense to try and tell the concluding chapters of Destiny 2 in a new game when Bungie already has the Destiny 2 platform built for more content. As such, Bungie has no current plans for Destiny 3. Everything it's working on is planned to be rolled out for Destiny 2 going forward for several years.

As for when Destiny 2 players can look forward to this content arriving, Benton doesn't make it explicit. However, going off of Bungie's current rhythm for Destiny 2 expansions it could be some time. If The Witch Queen launches in 2022 as its currently scheduled, and each subsequent expansion takes a year if not longer, then Lightfall would launch in 2023 and the unannounced expansion would have to follow in 2024. In other words, Destiny 2's longevity persists.

Further evidence that this is Bungie's current unannounced roadmap is the company's recently revealed plans to launch a new IP in 2025. That would give Bungie the next four years to "finish" the current story it's telling in Destiny 2, then leaving 2025 open to market and release the new Bungie IP.

There's always the caveat that plans could change, of course. Destiny 2 is doing well right now and Bungie is clearly confident that it will continue to do well. But it's impossible to predict if 3-4 years in the future Destiny 2 will continue to pull the number of players it currently does. Expansions could also take longer than expected, leading to expansions being pushed further and further out. Basically, Destiny 2 fans should enjoy what's currently available and otherwise trust Bungie to plan out the future as it sees fit

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
