Destiny 2 Confirmed for PC

[Updated 5/20/2017] The Destiny 2 trailer has now been released, and with it comes the confirmation that the game will indeed be coming to PC. With Destiny 2 officially announced by Bungie and Activision, a new page has shown up on the Destiny website where gamers can pre-order the game for their preferred platform, including PC.

Destiny 2 coming to PC isn’t much of a surprise considering it’s been rumored for months now. That said, nothing is ever official until announced by a developer. So with the official confirmation from Bungie now available, PC gamers can rejoice with the revelation.

It will be interesting to see how a PC version of Destiny 2 plays out for the franchise and developer. There are many pros and cons that come with PC versions of games, especially when it comes to first-person shooters. For instance, Destiny 2 on PC will give players a chance to experience the sci-fi world in 4k visuals, with an uncapped framerate. This is significantly better than the locked 30 frames per second on consoles.

Also, adding a PC version opens up the door to grow the community and include the three major gaming platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A PC version also means there may be more opportunities for Destiny 2’s PvP to enter the competitive scene. While there are already plenty of FPS competitive games, a PC version of Destiny 2 will allow the game to better enter that space and claim its place among the likes of Call of Duty and CS:GO.

On the flip side, there are some downsides to Destiny 2 coming to PC. First, with a PC version, there’s a greater fracturing of the community. As one Game Ranter recently pointed out, the option to play Destiny 2 with a mouse and keyboard means many gamers will leave consoles for PC to play Destiny 2.

There are also the challenges the developer will face. With PC comes a need for separate balancing for PC and consoles. There’s also the challenge of cheating to deal with on PC. As Massive learned this last year with The Division, cheating on PC can be hard to combat and can significantly hamper a game’s progress, especially in the competitive arena.

There's also the fact that the PC version of Destiny 2 will launch sometime after it releases on consoles. No official release date has been provided for the PC version, but hopefully it won't be too long after the September 8th release date for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Finally, PC releases tend to bring out data miners, who will browse a game’s files and leak any details they find. There’s little doubt gamers will be doing so in Destiny 2 from the moment the game’s files become available. It’s possible Bungie may omit PC in the beta in an effort to avoid leaks, but that hasn’t yet been announced. However, Bungie will have to be mindful of data miners and work diligently to keep files hidden away or held back so gamers don’t reveal details before they’re announced or released.

Despite these potential issues, many gamers, especially those who play on PC, are excited for Destiny 2 to come to the platform, especially after the official trailer reveal. Hopefully, Bungie has learned from the mistakes of others and will have a smooth roll out of the game on PC.

Destiny 2 is set to release on September 8, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The PC release is expected shortly after the console release, with Blizzard's service being used to launch Destiny 2 on PC.
