Destiny 2's Season of Plunder was a breath of fresh air compared to Season of the Haunted due to it adding multiple activities for players to farm. Season of Plunder's three activities are Ketchcrash, Expedition, and Hideouts, with the latter only being a means for Bungie to add a new story boss to the main seasonal quest each week, whereas Ketchcrash and Expedition comprise the true gameplay loop for this Season.

This guide is aimed at Destiny 2 players who want to learn more about Expedition, an activity that requires two different currencies to be played.

Season of Plunder's Expedition - Currency and Captain's Atlas

Season of Plunder adds three new currency types in Destiny 2, with Repute coming from seasonal challenges and only applying to the Star Chart vendor's upgrade page, and both Treasure Coordinates and Map Fragments being necessary to launch Expedition.

In order to get rewards from Expedition runs beside the free chest at the end, players need to slot into their Captain's Atlas a Treasure Map among those available, with the base ones awarding an extra Season of Plunder item or Glimmer.

Through upgrades to the Star Chart, players can then unlock more Treasure Maps, such as the Plunder Armor Map or the Plunder Weapon Map, with the latter being one of the best ways in the game to get more loot and possibly more Deepsight weapons.

Deeper into Season of Plunder, Destiny 2 players will also be able to unlock maps that award more Plundered Umbral Energy and other rewards, which will make for a more customized experience.

Slotting any Treasure Map in the Captain's Atlas costs currency, however. Namely, each Treasure Map has its associated Treasure Coordinates and Map Fragments cost that has to be paid.

Destiny 2 players can get Season of Plunder's currency types in various ways, as Map Fragments come from playing Ketchcrash, whereas Treasure Coordinates come from playlist activities or content like Nightfall Strikes, Wellspring, The Witch Queen missions, and more.

It's worth noting that players can only store up to 50 Map Fragments and 325 Treasure Coordinates at any given moment.

Season of Plunder's Expedition - Gameplay

In Expedition, players are tasked with traveling to the drilling site pointed on the map at the beginning of the activity and interacting with the drilling machinery to start.

Each drilling site out of the three available (on Europa, the Cosmodrome, and Nessus) will then be attacked by hordes of enemies, which players have to defeat in order to spawn Treasure engrams that they have to throw at the Expedition cart.

At 50% completion, the drilling will be interrupted by saboteurs spawning near the current location. Destiny 2 players will need to locate them, defeat every enemy in the area, and then take out the jammer to reprise drilling.

Upon reaching 100% completion, the cart will move to the next location. Again, players will need to start drilling, defeat enemies to spawn Treasure, and stop saboteurs until the cart goes back to 100% once more.

At that point, the cart will move again, this time to the location where players will fight the final boss of the Expedition mission, which acts more or less like a Heroic Public Event boss.

When players defeat the boss, a chest with loot will appear at the end, with three treasure spots behind it. Destiny 2 players with a Treasure Map slotted can then both loot the chest and dig up a treasure in one of the three spots, spending their Treasure Map in the Captain's Atlas.

Season of Plunder's Expedition - Champions and Ruffians

Every Expedition run features two types of Champions: Overload and Unstoppable. In the mission, however, they will have different names, with Overload Champions being called Saboteurs and Unstoppable Champions being referred to as Ruffians.

Saboteurs typically spawn while the cart is moving to a new location, and they will have to be defeated to progress. Killing Overload Champions is extremely important for players who want to get the Scallywag title and associated Season of Plunder Triumphs.

Ruffians are also needed for a dedicated Triumph, but their spawn method is different and more complex.

Destiny 2 players can force Ruffians to spawn by taking almost three minutes to complete each extraction, as Ruffians spawn between 2 minutes and 45 seconds into the mission and 3 minutes.

However, Ruffians will not spawn if players take less than 2 minutes and 45 seconds to fill up the cart and move to the next location. Likewise, Ruffians that are still alive when the cart reaches 100% progress will despawn immediately.

It's important that players use weapons that can stun Unstoppable Champions to rapidly defeat Ruffians, and if they are farming for Ruffian kills, specifically, then waiting before throwing Treasure engrams into the cart can help make Ruffians spawn.

Destiny 2 is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
