The Colony is one of the best Exotic Grenade Launchers in Destiny 2. This thing is an absolute beast in PVP thanks to its forgiving damage range, reusable shots, and great damage. Not to mention this thing is really fun to wield in combat.
The Colony Catalyst does offer a nice perk for those that use The Colony, but some players may wonder if it’s worth the hassle. To decide for yourself here’s everything you need to know about The Colony Catalyst and how to get one.
What It Does
The Colony catalyst provides a single perk to the Grenade Launcher:
- Deeper Pockets - Increase ammo reserves.
It’s a simple perk, but one that is very handy given the nature of The Colony. This is because the Colony has the trait, Serve The Colony, which causes the robot grenades to crawl back into the magazine when not equipped.
Between this trait and the new perk, players should have ample supplies of ammo to deal with any enemy they come across. It’s not a flashy DPS boost or damage modifier, but more ammo with a strong weapon like this is never a bad thing.
How To Find It
To get The Colony Catalyst, the player needs to defeat other Guardians in the Crucible. It doesn’t matter what difficulty or what mode, so long as the Guardian is killed while in Crucible it has a chance of dropping this Catalyst.
Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any way to improve the odds of a drop. It’s possible a higher difficulty level in Crucible can improve odds, but there’s no concrete evidence of this. For now, it’s recommended players pick a difficulty level they’re comfortable with and grind that.
Upgrading
Once the player has The Colony Catalyst, the next step is to upgrade it. To do this, players will need to defeat 500 enemies using The Colony. The enemy doesn’t have to be a Guardian, but the final blow must be done with one of the insectoid grenades.
These kills can also be accumulated retroactively. If the player achieved any kills with The Colony prior to getting the Catalyst they’ll count towards the 500. It’s recommended the player use this weapon to grind for the Catalyst, to help get the 500 kills faster.
Tips
Players can grind for The Colony Catalyst while tracking down others like the Black Talon Catalyst, which can be found during Crucible matches. Of course, the player runs the risk of a Catalyst other than The Colony dropping.
Low-level Crucibles matches are recommended to cut down on grinding time as each kill has a chance of resulting in a drop. Once obtained, it's also advised to grind low-level enemies in PVE to quickly upgrade it. Fortunately, The Colony is a powerful weapon in both PVE and PVP so players shouldn’t have too many problems getting kills organically. In fact, players may find The Colony Catalyst drops and upgrades without intending to do so.
