While there is still about two months until the release of Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion, fans can expect a lot of info to release about the add-on in the coming month. From new details about mods 2.0 to new PvP modes, there is going to be a lot for fans to digest and to look forward to experiencing.

In addition to new gameplay details about Destiny 2: Forsaken, Bungie has also revealed some of the gear that players will be able to collect. And one weapon that has caught many players’ eyes is the Cerberus +1 exotic auto rifle.

The Cerberus +1 is seen briefly in the teaser trailer that Game Informer released for its Destiny 2: Forsaken cover story Tuesday afternoon. And like many Destiny 2 exotic weapons, this auto rifle features a very unique design and offers a unique approach to combat.

Cerberus+1 has been dubbed the “Contra gun” because it fires a lot like the spread weapon in the side-scrolling classic. However, where the spread was vertical in Contra, the Cerberus +1’s spread is a bit more three dimensional.

Design-wise, the Cerberus +1 has four barrels tuned to four different lengths. Some are set for close range while others are set for long range encounters. So rather than a focused single line of bullets, the exotic auto rifle can fire at multiple targets, at multiple ranges, all at once. Whether that is the weapon's exotic perk or just a function of the auto rifle is unclear, but Game Informer says to expect more details as the month goes on.

While it’s hard to say how useful the Cerberus +1 exotic auto rifle will be, it’s hard to deny the weapon offers something a little different to Destiny 2 players. One of the main criticisms of Destiny 2 Year 1 was that a lot of exotic weapons didn’t feel truly special, because they didn’t offer enough of an advantage compared to most of the legendary weapons. Granted, Bungie has gone back through and buffed many of the exotic weapons to make them more viable, but the hope is that Forsaken will offer some really cool exotics right out of the gate.

At least at a glance Cerberus +1 sounds like it could be good for clearing groups of enemies without firing at individual targets one at a time. But we will have to wait until September to see how useful the exotic weapon truly is.
