With Destiny 2: Forsaken launching in a week, Bungie has started dropping hints about the upcoming DLC’s story. Following the release of the Forsaken launch trailer, Bungie posted a communication thread between Cayde-6 and Petra Venj, two big characters for Forsaken’s story. While at first glance, the communication is nothing more than the two joking with each other, Petra’s response holds a secret hint at the bigger picture of Forsaken.

This correspondence may hint at an important character from Destiny lore returning in Destiny 2. The important part of Petra’s message is the report from Paladin Oran.

“Free irregular kelvin radiation underneath liminal atmosphere layers in Venusian entryway. Deep interstellar simulation traces reveal elongated sidereal screens. Caldera apertures leave long free radical omissions. Mitigate if lateral lacerations yield neutrons.”

If you take the first letter of each word, it says “Fikrul Alive. Distress call from Illyn.” Fikrul is the name of The Fanatic, the top Baron beneath Uldren Sov. Illyn is a major character in the Awoken hierarchy. She is the leader of the Coven of Techeuns who assisted Mara Sov in the fight against Oryx. She also oversaw most of the research that the Techeuns did during her time as the leader of the Coven. This is not the first time that Awoken have used this strategy of hidden messages. The lore tab for the Telesto fusion rifle also holds a secret hint at Forsaken’s story.

In the Dreaming City trailer, players noticed that there were Techeuns attacking the player, seemingly "Taken" by whatever is corrupting the Dreaming City. This distress signal from Illyn could be why Petra Venj is allowing Guardians to enter the Awoken homeland in the first place. Perhaps players will help rescue Illyn or her coven of Techeuns, assuming they can be saved from the Taken force.

Considering the Taken seem to be a pivotal part of the Dreaming City and the Last Wish raid, players may learn more about the Taken Techeuns in Last Wish. While Techeuns in the past were very mysterious and virtually unknown to anyone outside of the lore community, players might finally be able to discover more about this mysterious faction of Awoken. Players will have to find out when they take to the Dreaming City after they take down Uldren Sov and the Barons in the Forsaken story campaign.

Destiny 2: Forsaken launches September 4 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
