The Cabal, namely the Red Legion, were the primary antagonists in vanilla Destiny 2 and have continuously reappeared in subsequent DLC and expansions. But with many of the Cabal leaders, assets, and footholds gone, where can their story lead next?

Season of the Worthy put a soft lid on the Cabal storyline with the Almighty live event. Bungie likes to spread the spotlight across Destiny 2's alien races as often as possible, and sure enough, the Cabal seem to be getting left out of the main narrative for the time being. Not only were they not featured in Beyond Light's showcase, but many Cabal-occupied destinations will be removed from the game with the launch of the expansion.

These destinations include Mercury, Mars, Io, and the Leviathan. Additionally, the Red War campaign and all other story content related to these locations are also being put into the Destiny Content Vault. Evidently, the Cabal are losing a lot of prominence in Destiny 2 but judging by the lore, their remaining forces will still linger around the system.

Nevertheless, what remains of the Cabal could eventually jump back to the forefront, as there are two major story points Bungie has left unanswered. The first is Calus and his relationship with the Darkness. Calus believes he has met the true Darkness and that it will eventually consume the entire universe. He regards it with reverence, but in his typical self-centered manner, wishes to be the very last thing it consumes.

Players themselves will come into contact with the Darkness on Europa this fall, and the events following this communion could lead to Calus in some way. Calus' ship, the Leviathan, may be inaccessible, but this doesn't necessarily mean the end for the ship. Therefore, Calus could still contact players and work with them via his agents or through his mechanical inventions, especially if he has uploaded his consciousness to a computer, as many fans have speculated.

If not the Emperor, his daughter Caiatl is the most likely candidate for continuing the story of the Cabal. Caiatl was one of the conspirators who overthrew Calus but she couldn't claim the throne until Ghaul was dead. Season of the Worthy lore states that with Ghaul's passing, Caiatl assumed control of the homeworld. She still believes in the ideals of the Red Legion and could rally them to mount another attack on humanity.

Caiatl's newfound forces could also come to the aid of the broken remains of the Red Legion in the solar system. During the events of The Taken King DLC, another legion, the Skyburners, sent out a signal to request help from the empire. Thus, it's possible that a similar distress call could be made by the Red Legion resulting in another Cabal offensive on Sol. Caiatl is already keen on establishing complete dominance over the galaxy and this call for help would be all the more reason to do so.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
