Destiny 2 developer Bungie has published a long blog post detailing many of the quality-of-life improvements and interface upgrades coming alongside the Lightfall DLC, and some of the upcoming changes are very substantial indeed. A full-fledged live-service FPS, Destiny has been evolving for years, and many of its interlocking gameplay systems didn't cooperate with one another all that well.

As impressive as Destiny 2's recent Lightfall DLC trailer showing Neomuna might have been, it didn't necessarily offer much to long-standing veterans of the game. However, Bungie isn't overlooking those who know the game inside and out, and the studio's latest in-depth overview of what's coming for all players late in February has gone above and beyond.

Destiny 2 is due to receive what may be its most substantial selection of general quality-of-life improvements yet. According to Bungie's new blog post, the developers are looking at ways to consolidate the game's many progression systems and combat options, and many of these efforts are centered around the long-awaited Loadout feature. Specifically, players will now be able to switch between entire sets of pre-set gear with the click of a button, which is going to be a huge boon when engaging with endgame-tier content. Moreover, Bungie is also setting up a more comprehensive - and permanent - Champion counter system, where specific elements come with built-in stun capabilities.

The fact that Bungie recently unlocked all Destiny 2 mods ahead of the Lightfall launch was a good sign of what's to come, too, because gear modding will receive its own dedicated interface where players will be able to manage their Mods. Better yet, this process will be improved further still through the removal of Energy types from the system, as well as a comprehensive balancing pass to retrofit old mods into this new gameplay ecosystem. Players should take note, however, that "not all current builds in Destiny 2 will be possible upon launch," suggesting that certain Mod interactions may be getting taken out of commission.

Bungie's summary of these improvements promises huge changes for the game in the long run. While the old Destiny 2 anti-Champion Exotic tier list will remain relevant, for example, players who don't yet have these coveted weapons will be able to rely on their abilities to deal with Champions instead. Judging by what's been said and shown off, Destiny 2 should feel far more open and flexible when it comes to character loadouts.

While nothing's been mentioned about Destiny 2's unique Solo Operative mod, specifically, Bungie did imply that the improved build crafting and gear management systems that are coming with Lightfall will only grow from that point on. Players excited about these prospects may still wish to be mindful of the changes: Warmind Cell mods, for one, will be permanently deprecated, and it's possible that they're not the only ones getting the axe.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. The Lightfall expansion is set to launch on all platforms on February 28.
