Just like the week before Forsaken’s release in September, Destiny 2 players have begun earning gear from the upcoming Black Armory DLC, despite it not releasing until next week. Apparently, enemies are appearing in the patrol areas on select destinations and killing them rewards this new gear.

Those that have been grinding through the PvE of Destiny 2 since the launch of Season 5 have likely seen both new enemies called Saboteurs and black caches in random spots. The black caches are empty right now, presumably to be filled with gear later on, but the Saboteurs can be killed now and they have a chance to drop Black Armory weapons.

So far, there are a handful of areas that have known Saboteur spawns, including the Gulch and Outskirts Lost Sectors in the European Dead Zone, and the Hallows and Artifact’s Edge Lost Sectors on Nessus. Any time that a player sees a Saboteur, they can kill it and there is a chance of dropping a new weapon from the Black Armory set.

Based on players sharing their drops from the Saboteurs, it appears that Bungie is repurposing weapons from Year 1 into Year 2, albeit with Year 2 perks and a new color scheme. For example, there is a hand cannon called Bad News XF4354 that looks similar to the Bad News in Year 1 with a few bits and bobs on the frame. That’s good news for players who were disappointed that some of their favorite weapons couldn’t get the Year 2 treatment (support for mods, better perk combos, etc.), but it might not go over well with all of the Destiny 2 community.

Bungie has yet to comment on the weapons being available, so it’s unclear if this intended and if this will be the way to acquire this Black Armory gear moving forward. Realistically, the design and naming of the weapons suggest that it is better suited to the Forge concept – i.e. players forge better versions of existing weapons – but it’s hard to say. Either way, players that want a little taste of Black Armory before next armory can seek out these Saboteurs.

Destiny 2: Black Armory releases December 4, 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
