Bungie revealed everything planned for the future of Destiny 2 during its livestream this morning, including that there are no plans to make a full-on sequel to the game. Instead, there will be multiple expansion packs coming over the next few years, with Destiny 2: Beyond Light planned to release on September 22. Die-hard fans of the game can officially pre-order special-edition Beyond Light collector's packs for different platforms from the Bungie Store for $199.99 — or $129.99 if they do not require a game code.
The collector's packs include digital content such as the Beyond Light soundtrack, and physical goodies including a light-up Splinter of Darkness replica, a Europa-themed bag and canteen, and a "Mysterious Logbook." These, alongside codes for the deluxe edition of the expansion (if applicable) and in-game content such as the No Time to Explain Exotic Pulse Rifle, are expected to arrive for interested Destiny 2 players by the official release date in September.
Anyone who pre-orders one of the bundles now can also get bonus in-game items within 24 hours of their purchase: A "Rimmed Shell" Exotic Ghost Shell, a legendary emblem, and an Exotic "Freeze Tag" emote. These should be usable even during the Season of Arrivals announced by Bungie this morning that began today.
While the upcoming expansions Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, and Lightfall will undoubtedly offer players plenty to look forward to in the looter shooter through 2022 at least, Bungie's announced plans for the future of Destiny 2 have some drawbacks. The developers will be removing Destiny 2's legacy content, including four planets and multiple raids, in order to make room for what's coming in the future.
However, there will also be some content returning as part of this multi-year plan. Bungie game director Luke Smith announced that the Vault of Glass raid will return in 2021, though exactly how Destiny's nearly seven-year-old raid will be handled is yet to be seen.
After weeks of speculation, the official unveiling of Bungie's plans makes the future of Destiny 2 look bright. Whether or not it seems worthy enough to warrant spending up to $200 on a collector's edition set is really up to the individual, but players will be able to upgrade Destiny 2 to work on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X once those consoles release, which may lend some credence to jumping on the bandwagon now.
