Destiny 2 players will have to wait until later in January to get their hands on the weapon, but one player has shown off some gameplay of the new exotic Bastion. This fusion rifle is set to join the Destiny 2 world as part of an exotic weapon quest that will go live on January 28th.

Reddit user SmartieStyle shared a brief clip of them using Bastion while at a Destiny community event in the Netherlands. As the player explains, they were dismantling gear and weapons on a sanctioned copy of Destiny 2 when the Bastion and the Devil’s Ruin appeared in their inventory. Unfortunately, they did not share any footage of the Devil’s Ruin in action, but SmartieStyle did say that they had been told it is “very overpowered.”

As far as Bastion is concerned, this exotic fusion rifle has a unique design and a few moving parts. When players charge up the fusion rifle, some pieces on the weapon rotate and glow before the Bastion fires. The symbols should be familiar to any Destiny 2 players that have spent some time in Season of Dawn, as they appear all over the place. Specifically, those symbols can be seen on the four Obelisks around the solar system.

Unfortunately, the Bastion gameplay does not show how strong the exotic fusion rifle is against enemies of Crucible opponents. Considering that fusion rifles typically melt PvP opponents, it stands to reason that Bastion will find its home in the Crucible, but it could be a strong PvE option as well.

Bastion’s main perk is called Saint’s Fists (the weapon quest explains this one of Saint-14's old weapons) and it launches three slug spreads when the weapon is fully charged. It’s unclear how these slugs will change up the damage radius of the weapon compared to other fusion rifles, but it likely means that the weapon can damage multiple foes in a wider radius.

The exotic fusion rifle’s other unique perk is called Breakthrough and it allows a portion of the weapon’s damage to bypass shields. It may not seem like a huge perk, but in instances where shields are very strong, or Destiny 2 players don’t have the right element to match a shield, Breakthrough could be a handy perk. Nightfall Strikes with the Match Game modifier, for example, might be easier with Bastion.

Over the last few seasons, Bungie has struggled to deliver Destiny 2 exotic weapons that feel worthy enough of a lengthy quest and strong enough to compete with old standbys. As a fusion rifle, Bastion is already facing criticism, but players could be pleasantly surprised when they get their hands on the weapon on January 28th.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
