When Bungie first revealed Shadowkeep, the new expansion coming this fall to Destiny 2, a new armor system, dubbed Armor 2.0, was shown. This new system was touted as a way for players to take a piece of armor they like cosmetically and apply a selection of their most desired mods to the armor in order to build the exact perk set on that armor that they desire.

The new system received a brief showcase in the new ViDoc showing off what's coming this fall in Destiny 2 with Shadowkeep and Year 3, but more light has been shed on the Armor 2.0 system. Destiny franchise director Luke Smith and general manager Mark Noseworthy went further in-depth about Armor 2.0 in an interview with Polygon.

First off, as was shown off in the original ViDoc, the way armor functions and the way it looks are being separated with new armor coming in Year 3. However, that doesn't mean there won't be a reason to keep chasing armor. That's because, according to Bungie, armor will come rolled with different stats of not just the Resilience, Mobility, and Recovery stats but also the Intellect, Discipline, and Strength stats from the first game.

Intellect, Discipline, and Strength will work in the same way as in Destiny 1, increasing the recharge rate of players' supers, grenades, and melee abilities respectively. The developers also revealed that Resilience, Mobility, and Recovery will have a wider range of effect with the new system, but they weren't ready to go into full details on exactly what that means.

From there, players will be able to essentially pick the perks of their armor to fit their playstyle by slotting different mods into the armor, similar to how players can currently slot mods into their weapons. Bungie says they are adding more mods into the game with Armor 2.0, giving players more customization options. Those mods will be found by playing the game with clear ways for players to chase down those mods. Smith also mentioned that Armor 2.0 will have an energy system that is the key to making armor more powerful, saying "You power up the armor to increase its capacity, which lets you equip more mods.”

The developers did say that it will be possible with the Armor 2.0 system to equip similar mods that will stack their effect. The example they gave was putting two hand cannon reloader mods on a set of gauntlets, with the result of doing so drastically speeding up the reload of that particular weapon type.

Of course, the energy system is likely there to keep the number of mods on a piece of armor in check. As far as how powerful these mods will make players, Bungie said it is still working on balancing that ahead of the launch of Shadowkeep, but the hope is to let players feel like they are growing stronger as they level up and build their armor.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep releases September 17, 2019 for Google Stadia, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
