Last week, fans finally got their first look at Destiny 2 as a reveal event showed off the game for the first time including the revelation that Bungie is reworking how weapon slots work, opting for a three-slot system that features a kinetic primary weapon in slot 1, an energy based primary weapon in slot 2, and a power weapon for slot 3. At a glance the system seems relatively simple, if a bit different, but apparently there is more to it than meets the eye.

In a recent interview, Destiny 2 Project Lead Mark Noseworthy spoke a bit more about the weapon changes, confirming that players could essentially equip two identical weapon types, such as hand cannons, in each slot if they wanted. Noseworthy then let slip that the studio may even have added some interesting interactions between certain weapons types as well.

Unfortunately, before more details could be extracted, the conversation quickly shifted to power weapons, leaving the community to speculate. The most logical guess from Noseworthy’s comments is that Destiny 2 will add Akimbo weapons (or dual wielding) to the game. Alternatively, it’s possible Bungie has created weapons that work better when paired, perhaps offering specific stat boosts when both are equipped.

The reason we’ve done this is because it gives players more choice, right, you can play the way you want to play, and really change things up. You know, we might even have some interesting interactions between weapons sometimes.

In addition to weapon changes, many of the returning subclasses have also gotten a few tweaks as well. For example, the Striker Titan, which previously could only “smash” once per super charge, can now set off multiple Fist of Havocs until the meter is fully drained. Hunter Gunslingers also have more shots to work with while Golden Gun is active, but the meter drains faster and the damage isn’t as high.

Destiny 2 releases September 8, 2017 for PS4 and Xbox One with the PC version arriving at a later, unannounced date.
