As big as The Witch Queen reveal was for the future of Destiny 2, Bungie has given players a first glimpse as to what's in store leading up to the expansion's 2022 release. Bungie is planning to celebrate the studio's 30th anniversary this Christmas with players inside of Destiny 2 with a mix of new and old content for everyone to enjoy. However, the biggest gift for longtime Destiny players is the return of one of the series' most iconic weapons inside of Destiny 2.

The free 30th Anniversary event is kicking off in December 2021 to bring the calendar year to a close and begin the home stretch of Season of the Lost. The centerpiece of the free event will be the Nine-themed Dares of Eternity, a new six-player matchmade activity where players can earn loot celebrating Bungie's previous games and 30-year history.

Alongside the free event, Bungie will be offering the 30th Anniversary Pack for players to purchase. The pack will include a new "treasure-themed" dungeon set inside the infamous Cosmodrome loot cave from Destiny 1. Players will be able to earn Thorn-inspired armor sets for each class, reprised Destiny 1 weapons, including the popular Eyasluna hand cannon and 1000-Yard Stare sniper rifle.

However, the biggest news for longtime Destiny players is the return of Gjallarhorn inside of the 30th Anniversary Pack. Bungie confirmed the exotic rocket launcher will drop inside of the new dungeon as it's "crown jewel" drop. The studio was quick to temper player expectations, saying the exotic will be tuned to fit inside of the Destiny 2 sandbox, so don't expect those wolfpack rounds to melt Atheon inside of Vault of Glass the way it could back in 2014.

With everything coming to Destiny 2 over the next six months, the return of Gjallarhorn is going to be one the community will likely rave about even after it drops in the dungeon. Gjallarhorn was "the" weapon during Destiny's first year that players strived for in the original endgame. The weapon was almost a requirement for many raid teams running the original Vault of Glass and Crota's End because of how powerful it was, and this could happen again.

That said, the return of Gjallarhorn and all the other content coming in the event and pack feel like a "thank you" from Bungie to its community. Bungie has long highlighted the community it has cultivated over its 30-year history, whether players were there from the start with Pathways Into Darkness or only recently jumped into Destiny 2. The studio wants to make it clear it wouldn't be were it is without all these players, and this pack and event seem like a fitting way to celebrate inside the massive universe it created.

Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
