A new rumor suggests that Sony has cancelled its annual Destination PlayStation event as it plans a major PS5 announcement. There have been several rumors about Sony's PS5 plans, and one leak says that the company will be holding a PS5 PlayStation Meeting event.

On Twitter, journalist Mike Futter revealed that "multiple sources" have told him that Sony has decided to cancel its Destination PlayStation event this year. The event typically allows retailers to learn about PlayStation's plans for the year and is presented by Sony, but Futter said that this year it will be presented by a "major distributor" instead. Futter also speculated that the change to Destination PlayStation is part of Sony's PS5 reveal plans, and that the company "wants the spotlight (and doesn't want to do a second event in the same window) when it does its full reveal for PS5."

Fans have been speculating for a few days about how Sony will reveal the PS5 console. Sony has confirmed that it won't be at E3 2020, meaning that it won't be able to use the excitement around the games industry event to get more people feeling excited about the PS5. The company's decision not to attend also makes it more likely that it will hold an event of its own, and if it's not doing Destination PlayStation, it will probably be some other sort of event.

When Sony revealed the PS4, it did so at its own event, which it held early in the year of 2013. This is part of why fans felt so strongly that Sony was planning a major PS5 event before it was revealed that the company isn't planning Destination PlayStation. With so many rumors backing the idea, what's left is for Sony to make an official announcement.

Fans will be hoping that Sony uses the event to confirm all of the PS5 details they've been asking about, like its price, its launch titles, and its release date. There have been so many rumors about the PS5's price that gamers aren't sure if the console will be ridiculously expensive like the PS3 or if it will be affordable. There have also been suggestions that GTA 6 will be a PS5 launch title and that the console will have several major exclusives, but Sony will likely reveal more about all of this at the PS5 event.
