Considering its high profile, many newcomers are likely venturing through this brutally challenging adventure for the first time. To help green players find their footing, the tips below will help make the early parts of the game more accessible. It is easy to lose hope during the early hours, but players who hang in there will find themselves heavily rewarded.

10 Magic

Choosing a Royalty class - Demons Souls Tips From Dark Souls

It is easy to ignore spells and go for a melee build, but choosing the Royalty class at the beginning is a great way to set the character on the path towards becoming a strong mage. The first spell, Soul Arrow, is a ranged attack and takes out many enemies in one or two hits from the start. The class also starts out with a ring that regenerates magic points.

9 Fire

Fire is a great friend for many situations. The first boss in particular is super vulnerable to it, so save up all the Fire Bombs for this bout. Shortly afterwards the player will be able to buy spells, so buy the Flame Toss spell as soon as possible. It uses more MP than Soul Arrow, but also does significantly more damage, so it is worth the extra cost.

8 Keep Your Distance

Narrowly dodging an attack - Demons Souls Tips From Dark Souls

Assuming one has already made a magic-using character, keeping distance from enemies should be easy and a no brainer. Especially in the early areas of the game, particularly the first two Archstones, most enemies are melee attackers, so keeping several meters away from them makes the player virtually invincible. Many early bosses are also hopeless against the hero as long as players are far away and shoot magic. Maybe it is exploiting the game, but one has to do anything to survive.

7 Stay In Soul Form

After dying in human form, the player will then be in soul form. The character has less health during this phase, but do not take this as a sign to use an item to return to human form. Dying too often while human will turn the world's soul tendency black, which makes the area harder. Save those Stones of Ephemeral Eyes for key moments like bosses when every bit of health counts. Additionally, players cannot invade those who are in soul form.

6 Firestorm

This one is accessible a little later in the game, but it is essential for magic users who want to make quick work of some bosses and tougher enemies. Find Yuria the Witch in the area after beating the Tower Knight in the first Archstone and use the Bloody Iron Key to access the area where she is being held prisoner. Players also need the Official's armor pieces to disguise themselves and have an enemy lower a bridge to access her. After rescuing her, she can teach the Firestorm spell using the Dragon Demon Soul. Just be sure not to have already used the soul to craft a spell from the Sage rescued in the fourth Archstone.

5 Regenerator Ring

The Regenerator Ring steadily recovers health. Not only does it help stay alive longer, but by extension it also saves resources like healing items and magic.

It is accessible in several places, but the easiest place to snatch it up is in the first area of the fourth Archstone on the side of a cliff. One has to progress pretty far in this area to access it, but it is worth it.

4 Stay Light

Equipment burden is a vital part of the gameplay experience. When armor is under fifty percent, the player runs at a faster speed and rolls with greater efficiency. When more than half the equipment burden is used the player walks slower and rolls more clumsily. It is best to keep the character light so dodging is easier. To equip some heavier armor while still maintaining the free movement, feel free to upgrade the endurance stat to increase the maximum equipment burden.

3 Some Bosses Are Puzzles

Unlike future games in FromSoftware's catalog, many of the bosses feel more like puzzles than honest fights. Keep this in mind if a particular bout starts to feel insurmountable.

The Dragon God, for example, is purely a puzzle based on sneaking around the giant beast to damage it with harpoons. Additionally, the Leechmonger heals itself consistently so one has to physically attack it when it does this before continuing a ranged assault.

2 Don't Be Afraid To Grind

Successfully landing a strike - Demons Souls Tips From Dark Souls

If a particular boss or area is causing too much trouble, do not be afraid to grind and beef up the character. Despite the real-time combat and emphasis on skill, Demon's Souls is still an RPG at the end of the day, so stats and equipment are a big part of the picture. There's nothing wrong with finding a good area with a lot of souls, putting on some music or a podcast, and then slashing away to farm. The second area of the fourth Archstone is particularly nice for this.

1 Switch Between Archstones Regularly

Demon's Souls features five areas players can explore at their leisure once they beat the first boss. Do not try and take these Archstones one at a time. Instead, consistently switch between them. After beating the first boss of a particular Archstone, move on to the next one because, more likely than not, the following area of any particular level is too difficult. Not only is it advised from a gameplay perspective, but switching helps keeps the environments fresh.
