For months, fans speculated over what Bluepoint Games could be working on next. The developer has a stellar reputation for its remakes, with its most recent being Shadow of the Colossus, and many fans thought it would be tackling either Legend of Dragoon or Demon's Souls next. With the latter now confirmed to be in development, fans have a lot of reasons to be excited.

After all, it is a remake and not a remaster. This means the game is getting more than a paint job, it's being rebuilt from the ground up by an establish remake pro. Fans can expect fixes, new content, and more for the game, but one thing remakes occasionally do is restore cut content. There's a lot of reasons certain content doesn't make it into a game, including technical limitations, but with Demon's Souls Remake coming to PS5, that's probably not a concern.

Cut Demon's Souls Enemies and NPCs

demons souls cut enemies

Demon's Souls has no shortage of interesting enemies, but there are quiet a few that didn't make the cut. In a section of the unused Broken Archstone map, players could encounter Serpent Soldiers. They would use both a sword and a bow. Players could also encounter a mimic here nicknamed Chomper, which would again appear in the unused Broken Archstone map. A Yeti Monster also appeared in this map, which would eat the playable because its stomach was actually its mouth.

There's also an unused werewolf, werehyena, and bear warrior, which would all seemingly act as a barbarian in combat. Their model names would carry the same moniker for barbarian and beast, after all. Joining these models was another alternative barbarian or beast, this time being that of an Owl mage. It would have been interesting to see in Demon's Souls combat, but there also some other basic cuts like the wounded wolf, models for crocodiles and deer, and a Shadow bird.

It wasn't just enemies cut from Demon's Souls either. There are mentions of the Filthy One, a woman who would wield a serpent staff and be covered in bugs, and her child in files. In contrast, in the same area players could encounter a sophisticated man who wears a monocole. Other cut NPCs include a character named Tell-All, the Hanging Woman (the potential daughter of Stockpile Thomas), and a few characters such as the Maiden in Black who had additional tasks for the player cut from the game. There's also unique, unused animations for Man-Eaters, the Old Monk, the Crystal Lizard, and the Monumental, as well as audio relating to other forms of cut content by the Crestfallen Warrior.

Demon's Souls' Broken Archstone Map

As seen above, many of the cut enemies from Demon's Souls were cut because their map, the Broken Archstone, was also cut. Otherwise known as the Land of the Giants, this labyrinth-designed map was crawling with enemies. There's a castle, where players were likely meant to encounter the final boss of the map. However, files for said enemy don't seem to have been found, likely meaning it was used elsewhere or never manifested. There are lot of areas that seem ripe for enemy encounters that ultimately did not make it into the game.

Cut Demon's Souls Items

A few items and a spell have also been discovered, but the content for them doesn't go far. There's an unknown dagger, hand axe, spear, and a spell. One of the spell's effects is described as "Change into Black Ghost," but what that means in full is hard to determine. Another cut item is the Execution Grounds Key, likely cut just to have the World Tendency Event opening the door automatically. There's also a lot of upgrade material cut from the original Demon's Souls, which would serve as a good way to expand the game in that department.

Notably, there's a lot less cut from the game in the form of items than other departments, but perhaps the most interesting aspects are up next.

Other Cut Demon's Souls Content

PS5's Demon Souls is getting a Fractured Mode, but what that is or how it works remains to be seen. However, that mode could be made on some of the following cut content, if it's nothing something entirely new.

True Death is a hardcode mode version of the game, which means it would be harder than the average run of a Souls game. It's unknown if it were indeed a separate mode or how the game mode would have functioned, but it means that dying in soul mode resulted in a punish form of near perma-death. It's unclear what would be lost, but players would be set back severely for dying in this form, potentially returning to a Stone Monolith. Recollecting the player's bloodstain would restore the character in this mode, though. This would make sense if it were the Fractured Mode, making speedruns of his game harder on this difficulty.

An abandoned system for co-op is also detailed, but it's unlikely to be coming back. Essentially, the "alignment" of a character would determine if they spawned as a black ghost or a white ghost, resulting in a randomized effect.

Will Cut Content Be Restored in Demon's Souls Remake?

Since all that has been shown is a brief trailer, it's hard to say what Demon's Souls Remake will add or change about the game. However, including a fixed-up version of the Broken Archstone map would likely go a long way with fans of the franchise, which could several of these enemies finally appear in the game. It all remains to be seen, but there's little doubt about the anticipation behind Bluepoint Games' next remake.

Demon's Souls Remake is in development for PS5.
