Demon's Souls originally launched in 2009, with tons of roadblocks and issues impeding its way onto the scene. Once the game was officially released, fans couldn't get enough of its fast paced combat, unique controls, and enthralling world. The world of Demon's Souls has been explored in great detail since the game's original release and even more so recently with the PS5 remake.

Even though there were a lot of questions fans thought would get answers, it seems that the remake has only brought more mysteries than solutions. FromSoftware is known for their ability to intertwine world building with gameplay, creating an experience unlike traditional action-RPGs. These little details are usually solved, but also sometimes don't have a solid answer.

10 Echoes, Moans, And Screams

Player Character Hears Sounds In The Nexus

Throughout Demon's Souls on the PS5, there are strange noises that the player might come across. The sounds are like a moan coming from the walls but the source of these moans hasn't been discovered.

Sony made a statement saying the sounds are a glitch but fans still are uncovering similarities between the sounds and other files within the game.  The biggest speculation seems to be that the sounds may be related to Elden Ring, a new game in development by FromSoftware.

9 The Broken Archstone

World Tendency Menu of Demon's Souls Remake

One of the biggest mysteries in Demon's Souls lore has been the Sixth Archstone. It was in the original game and seemed to be there for a reason. Nobody could tell if it was there for lore reasons or if FromSoftware wanted to create a sixth world and just gave up partially through.

Either way, when the trailer for the remake dropped and there was a shot of icy mountains, fans speculated that the mysterious sixth world would make its appearance in the Demon's Souls remake. Unfortunately for them, the sixth stone is still shattered and unusable in the remake as well, leaving the mystery unsolved to this day.

8 The Kingdom To The South

Player Character Overlooks The Gates Of Boletaria

Demon's Souls' universe is much larger than the kingdom of Boletaria that the player gets to see. There are NPCs who come from all over the world in search of peace and a nicer life, fleeing the scourge of the Undead. There's a lot of talk of a kingdom to the south of Boletaria that is never strictly named. All that is revealed about the kingdom is that they are well versed in technology, while Boletaria spent their resources on magic.

7 Umbasa

Bloodborne Umbasa side by side with Saint Urbain saying Umbasa

Umbasa is a phrase repeated with religious meaning in Boletaria. The mystery that comes from this phrase is actually found in an old Bloodborne build. In the alpha, Father Gascoigne utters the phrase with ragged breath.

Once fans heard the reference in Bloodborne, it was instantly speculated that Bloodborne and Demon's Souls happen in the same universe. After the speculation was allowed to run wild, FromSoftware removed the line from Gascoigne's dialogue and fans questioned what happened. It has been said that Bloodborne was the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls but there was never a direct statement from FromSoftware explaining the reference to Umbasa. Perhaps Yharnam is the kingdom to the south mentioned repeatedly in Demon's Souls.

6 The Maiden In Black's Origins

Maiden In Black Closeup

The Maiden In Black guides the player character through their adventure in Boletaria. She is there to help them level up, respec stats, and travel to and from The Nexus freely. She is also the heroine of the story depending on how the player progresses and what choices they make.

The most mysterious part thing about the Maiden is that she was apparently once a powerful demon. According to her soul's description she was aligned with The Old One but doesn't side with The Old One during the events of the game. Other than this, her origin is never explained. It isn't clear why she tends to The Nexus so diligently or why she turned against The Old One in the end. All that is explained is that the player can level up by touching the demon inside her.

5 The Nameless Creator

Maiden In Black Confronting The Old One

The Nameless Creator is the equivalent of a holy figure in the Demon's Souls universe. He was the creator of the world and the Old One. The mystery of the Nameless Creator lies in his motivations. On one hand, he is depicted as a merciful being in the eyes of King Allant. Allant believes he is merciful because The Old One proposes an escape from suffering to the people of Boletaria.

The other side of the coin sees The Nameless Creator as malevolent as written in the item description of the sword he left behind. The sword split into two, Demonbrandt and Soulbrandt, reflecting the two choices for humanity. The choices presented were to become human, and use and souls for developing human thought, or become demons and use souls for power. The Nameless Creator's origins and true motives are never mentioned but it's obvious that He had plans for humanity, and wanted to test them along the way. It just isn't clear which choice was the right one in the end.

4 What Happened To Stockpile Thomas?

Stockpile Thomas Asking the Player Character For Help

The man who lightens the load of the player character, and creates a warm atmosphere in The Nexus has a dark backstory. Before finding himself in The Nexus, he worked as a hunter, but when the scourge was upon him and his family, he abandoned them, fleeing to save himself. Next thing he knew, he was in The Nexus and couldn't bring himself to leave.

Later on, the player finds the remains of his wife and daughter, hung above a balcony in the Boletarian Palace. All this reveals to the player is that his family didn't make it out, but this begs the question, how did Thomas end up in The Nexus? How did his family actually die? Normally people were killed and left to burn on the streets but Thomas' family specifically was hanged and displayed, indicating something must have been special about them. The answer was unclear in the original game and still remains unanswered in 2020.

3 The Swirly Pit in 1-1

The Player Character Fights Near the Roof of Miralda's Execution Room

Every player has walked past this pit in the early levels of Demon's Souls and wondered what was up with it. The pit itself looks like an obvious hazard placed in an inconvenient area that the player has to pass through to progress. Upon further inspection, there are what look like souls swimming around the pit, alluring the player to venture closer. Some players even jump in, looking to absorb those souls, only to find death at the bottom of the pit.

Since the game's original release 11 years ago, there have been no concrete answers about what the pit actually is. It's a unique hazard that depicts swirling lights that can't be found anywhere else in the game. Fans speculate that the pit glows with the souls of the victims of the Executioner Miralda since she is found below the pit geographically. The souls get trapped in the pit, tortured forever, never to be absorbed or converted to power.

2 The Northern Limit

The Expanse of The Northern Limit as Shown by The Trailer

The Northern Limit is a stage in Demon's Souls that was content for the original game. It can be found in the game files as a sixth world that isn't directly tied to the broken Archstone. The Northern Limit is mentioned in item descriptions as where King Allant was able to establish The Nexus. In the trailer for the Demon's Souls remake, a snowy, mountainous region is visible and animated, but the stage still is not in the game. Fans can only wonder why FromSoftware cut it if it has such significant lore meaning.

1 What Happened To The Other Monumentals?

The Last Monumental Explaining the Plight of Their Race to the Player

The Monumentals exist to atone for their crimes of overindulging in the soul arts. They were considered the most powerful society at a time so how come there're so few in The Nexus when the player arrives?

To lull the Old One and return the world to normal, they use the player and bind them to The Nexus until the deed is done, explaining the immortality of the player. What is not explained is why all Monumentals seem to be dead or unconscious, when they were cursed to deal with the Old One indefinitely.
