And so begins the third season of Demon Slayer (fourth if you count the TV recut of the first movie, however, it appears most fans do not consider that a true season of the show and more of a ‘directors cut’ of the film).

As one can expect, there is a lot to pick up on after the devastating events at the end of the previous season. It is time to figure out who lived, and who died. What the next step is in the battle against the remaining members of the Twelve Kizuki. There is much to discuss, so let’s jump into it.

What Happened at the End of the Previous Season?

Demon Slayer Inosuke Hashibira Tanjiro Kamado Nezuko Kamado healing

The final episode of season two involved Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu facing off against Muzan Kibutsuji, the powerful demon who has been their primary antagonist throughout the series thus far. Muzan transformed into a massive, multi-armed monster and battled our heroes with incredible strength and speed. Despite their best efforts, the three Demon Slayers were struggling to land a decisive blow on Muzan, and their attacks seemed to have little effect on him. Meanwhile, the other members of the Demon Slayer Corps were also engaged in a fierce battle against Muzan's minions, who were attacking the city in an effort to protect their master.

The battle seemed hopeless as injuries from previous battles took their toll and reckless decisions were made all around. However, with the help of some allies, the Demon Slayers were finally able to land a critical blow on Muzan, weakening him and thus allowing Tanjiro to deliver the finishing blow. Muzan was defeated, and his minions were quickly dispatched. With the battle finally over, the surviving members of the Demon Slayer Corps mourn their fallen comrades and celebrate their hard-won victory. It is these events that lead viewers into the new season.

Where Are We Now?

This season of Demon Slayer is the beginning of the Swordsmith Village Arc, and unlike most episodes of the series that are a half-hour long, this one is an hour-long premiere. Those who saw the Demon Slayer To the Swordsmith Village movie will no doubt recognize the events of this film, as this episode was the second half of that movie (this will explain why this episode is an hour long as opposed to thirty minutes). For those who may be joining the series for the first time, the episode opens with an ill Kagaya Ubuyashiki, who (despite his condition) is ecstatic to discover that an Upper Rank demon has been killed for the first time in 100 years.

Little do our heroes know that Muzan survived his last encounter with the Demon Slayers. Furious with the turn of events, he summons a meeting with other Upper-Rank demons of the Twelve Kizuki: Kokushibo (#1), Doma (#2), Akaza (#3), Hantengu (#4), and Gyokko (#5 [the mistress of the palace, Biwa Woman Nakime, is also in attendance]). During this meeting, Muzan expresses his anger at the loss of two of the Twelve Kizuki and demands everyone refocus on destroying the Ubuyahiski family and finding the Blue Spider Lily. While Muzan is still the one in control, several of the Twelve Kizuki are beginning to question his abilities now with the recent failures, and there is at least one demon (Akazu) who seems to have his own ulterior motives in mind.

Cut to Tanjiro, who has awoken from a two-month coma after the events of the last episode. While everyone is happy to see him awake, Tanjiro is more concerned about a strange visitor he received in a dream while he was in the coma. This visitor wore the same kinamoto as Tanjiro does, and thanks the demon slayer for saving his family and vows to keep Tanjiro’s name alive, seeing as how he has no heir. While the future is uncertain for our heroes, for the time being, everyone is just happy that Tanjiro is on the road to recovery after defeating an Upper Rank demon.

Though Tanjiro is on the road to recovery, the fact that the remaining Twelve Kizuki are still out there. Complicating matters more is the fact that Tanjiro is unable to repair his broken sword, and his master refuses to help due to Tanjiro’s reckless use of it in battles.

Nevertheless, there ARE rumors of a weapon hidden in the village that Tanjiro currently is recovering in, and if he is to continue his fight, he may need to find the weapon himself. Whether he can (or if the weapon is real or not) will likely be revealed in the next episode of Demon Slayer, and it is going to be exciting to see where this all goes from here!
