Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles is the first console game based on the popular anime series. It was made as a collaboration between Sega and CyberConnect2. This is a big deal seeing as CyberConnect2 usually works with Bandai Namco on these fighting/RPG hybrid anime tie-in projects. A great example would be the Naruto Ultimate Ninja titles.

Looks like Sega swooped this popular property from under Bandai Namco's feet. There are eleven fighters in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles which does not count any repeats. To clarify, there are different versions of the same character, like Tanjiro, for example. This list will rank the core versions of every fighter from worst to best. As a final note, not all characters are available at the start of the game but getting everyone won’t take that long.

11 Murata

Murata is one of the weaker fighters in the game. He only uses bare sword techniques without any sort of elemental backing. Murata isn’t that strong in the anime either. He is a side character that had to be rescued.

Murata had a small moment in the sun but it wasn’t anything overwhelming. Putting him in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles seems like a bit of a joke for fan service.

10 Sabito

The game opens up with the Sabito vs Tanjiro fight in the story. It’s a great place to begin which drops a lot of background fans are probably all too familiar with. Like in the anime, Sabito is a pretty strong early-season character.

His moves in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles match that of Tanjiro’s which makes him feel a bit too much like a clone of him as a fellow water elemental user. The one plus side over Tanjiro is that Sabito has large water arced slices during normal combos.

9 Makomo

Makomo is in the same boat as Sabito. She’s also a guardian of that starter area in the story and uses water powers as well. What makes her stand out slightly above Sabito is her speed. Due to her petite nature, Makomo can move like lightning, or more precisely, a raging river of water.

Her strikes aren’t that strong but she can win in an endurance fight if players use her right in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles.

8 Sakonji

Master Sakonji is Tanjiro’s teacher in the anime. His blows are stronger than Tanjiro’s or any of his other students. There is a catch to that as he has a lot of reused movements just like Sabito’s curse.

As Master Sakonji is an older man, he is rightfully a slower character. The build in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles favors power above speed which makes sense but this makes Master Sakonji, not as fun to use.

7 Zenitsu

Zenitsu is one of the funnier characters in the anime. All he thinks about is girls and he’s not a fan of fighting. That is until he falls asleep. That’s when another version of himself awakens. He uses lightning which is a nice change-up from all of the previous water users who take up a majority of the cast.

Zenitsu is strong but he can be hard to master because he isn’t about combos. He’s more of a counter character which takes more patience. He has an academy alter version of himself that players differently except for the special which is unique.

6 Nezuko

Nezuko is the only demon character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles right now. The developers have promised post-game free DLC to add more demons in though. Players can assume these will actually be villains since Nezuko, despite her affliction, is a kind-hearted soul.

She’s a melee master who uses her claws like knives. Nezuko is not as flashy as the characters that use elemental magic, but she’s still a stand-up character in the ring. She also has a goofy academy version of herself.

5 Kyujuro

Kyujuro is a fan favorite all thanks to the movie, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Without spoiling anything, he has quite the emotional arc in it. He also has one of the cooler fights in the film. Kyujuro’s firepower and strength are amazing in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles as well.

He’s another character that is built around power rather than speed. If players can manage to corner an opponent, they can destroy them easily by burning them metaphorically to ash.

4 Giyu

Giyu is another fan favorite as he is the first demon slayer shown in the anime. His cool demeanor and non-talkative attitude also make him mysterious.

Anime fans tend to flock to those hidden idol types. In the game, he does not disappoint either. He is on par with Kyujuro in terms of raw power. What makes him better is than him is that Giyu has slightly better speed. He also has a comedic academy version of himself.

3 Shinobu

Shinobu is a classic anime character that acts like a goof but has incredible power hiding inside. She operates very differently compared to other fighters in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles. Her sword stabs rather than slashes.

Her speed is second to none as a Hashira which means Shinobu can get in close fast or get away from an enemy quickly as well. Her butterfly powers are also quite pretty. To match her dorky personality, she too has an alter academy design.

2 Inosuke

Inosuke in the character select menu from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles

Inosuke is in the same boat as Murata as he doesn’t have an elemental power backing his corner. That doesn’t stop Inosuke from being an absolute beast in the ring. His dual sword techniques are fast and he has the strength to back them up.

A lot of his moves are like breakdance techniques. He’s a marvel to control or watch in battle in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles just as he is in the anime. There’s an academy version for Inosuke too.

1 Tanjiro

Tanjiro in the character select menu from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles

As Tanjiro is the main character of the anime, it only seems natural that he should make it to the top. There are three versions of Tanjiro. There is his starter water-based version which is referred to by just his name. There is the goofy academy version.

Then there is the Hinokami alter ego which switches up water techniques for fire. The Hinokami character is Tanjiro’s best version. He’s an all-around balanced fighter in all versions, but Hinokami is his fastest.

Demon Slayer-Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles was released on October 13, 2021 and is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X.
