Dungeon-crawling RPG title Demeo officially launches today. The VR game brings many of the elements present in traditional tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons into the virtual realm.

Demeo was initially announced last December, developed by Resolution Games. A dedicated AR and VR game studio, Resolution is the team behind other titles such as Blaston, Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, and Cook-Out. Its prior work spans many genres, but this appears to be the company's first crack at classic high fantasy.

A game "decades in the making," according to Resolution CEO Tommy Palm, Demeo strives to strike a balance between recreating the nostalgic feeling of gathering around a table with friends while still embracing the immersive qualities of virtual reality. The game allows for up to four players to make their way through various levels of dungeons, defeating creatures and discovering treasures along the way. Players are able to choose between one of four classes: Hunter, Sorcerer, Assassin, and Guardian, each with their own set of unique abilities. The VR title will have private and public lobbies, and already has an extensive content roadmap established with content updates in the future.

Classic tabletop RPGs have gone through somewhat of a renaissance in recent years. In addition to the classic Dungeons and Dragons spiking in popularity, one of its spin-offs, Pathfinder, is receiving a new video game in Pathfinder: Wrath of the RighteousBoth Pathfinder and Demeo are inspired by D&D, showing just how popular the high fantasy genre and tabletop games continue to be.

Demeo is available now for Oculus Quest and Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality.
