Deltarune is full of memorable characters, and one of the most important, and most popular, is Susie, the lizard-like school bully. Over the course of the story, she changes from threatening antagonist to close friend and valuable ally, and that's just the first chapter.

Chapters One and Two have been released for free, with several more planned for the future. Although no one can be certain what direction the story will go from here, there are several aspects of Susie that are rarely mentioned, or quickly glossed over, that are likely to be important in later chapters.

10 She Is Sad

impale Cropped

A common trope with bully characters is that their aggression stems from personal feelings of anger or sadness. This is almost certainly the case with Susie. Much of her dialogue alludes to her being tired of everything, or resigned to her status.

She also has several lines about impaling herself on spikes, which could just be part of her reckless nature, but could be a genuine impulse toward self-harm. Even if she's kidding, jokes can contain a nugget of truth.

9 Her Classmates Hate Her

chalk2 Cropped

In Chapter One, when Kris, the main character, is made to partner with Susie, almost every single classmate has something bad to say about her. Most of them allude to Susie's tendencies toward violence.

While it may be justified, so much of their reaction could stem from fear, however, it's strange for their opinions to be so unified and constant. Several students continue to talk bad about Susie after school hours. Monster Kid makes Kris angry with their comments, and Catti tells Kris to make sure Noelle stays away from her.

8 ...But She Doesn't Hate Them

getit3 Cropped

Although her classmates regularly badmouth her, Susie doesn't spend time doing the same to them. Her stance is usually a resigned "everyone hates me and that's okay," but it doesn't come with any specific resentment, even against Berdly, the most obnoxious student of all.

There is even evidence of her trying to interact with them, such as her saved search on the library computer, checking whether Tem's hard-boiled egg can hatch. Tem interprets this as Susie being mean by telling her the egg won't hatch, but it may have been a genuine effort to help.

7 She Was Always Nice To Noelle

There's one notable holdout in the war on Susie: Noelle, the deer-like monster with an obvious crush. Noelle's motivations are likely to be very important as the game progresses.

Although Susie is known for terrorizing the other students (which may or may not be true), during Chapter Two Susie admits to Noelle, under the pretense that they're dreaming, that she never picked on Noelle because of the pencil Noelle lent her on her first day. Whether this will translate into reciprocal feelings remains to be seen, but the two do seem to have a good time together.

6 She Wants To Be Godzilla

lie5 Cropped

This is a strangely specific wish that might become relevant later. There are subtle signs, such as her love of giant monster movies, but the text states it explicitly during Chapter Two's Ferris Wheel scene.

Susie tells Noelle if she were 'Susiezilla' that she could wreck the whole city, and when Noelle asks whether she thinks about that a lot, Susie's response is an obvious lie of "no" that Noelle calls her out on. On a surface level, this could represent Susie's desire to lash out at an unjust world, or the need to take control over a powerless situation. However, in the context of the Dark World, there's a chance it will happen literally.

5 She Has A Tail (And Keeps It Secret)

tail6 Cropped

This seemingly minor fact was revealed in Chapter Two during the Ferris Wheel scene when Noelle notices it wagging. Her tail is never actually visible to the player, possibly because she tries to keep it hidden.

When Noelle asks about it, she gets angry, admitting that she doesn't like people knowing about it. Why is she concerned with hiding it? There is a fair chance it will come up later in the game, possibly tied to her other personal issues.

4 She Doesn't Have Her Own Room

room7 Cropped

At the start of Chapter Two, Ralsei gifts Susie and Kris rooms in his castle. Susie's response here is rather telling. Although she's holding back her feelings like usual, she seems very surprised to have "her own room". That reaction can only mean she doesn't have her own room at home, which is a little unusual for a high school kid.

How bad is her living situation? Does she share a room with family? Is her house too small for her to have a bedroom? Does she have a home at all? This point is very likely to come up later. For example, if Susie is forced to choose between the Dark World and the Light.

3 She Avoids Calling Home

Susie from Deltarune pretends to use the phone.

Related to the previous paragraph, there is a brief moment near the end of Chapter Two, when Susie is planning on staying the night at Kris' house. Toriel tells Susie to call her parents and let them know she'll be staying over. Susie goes to the phone while Toriel isn't looking, stands there for a moment, and turns away without using it.

This little action could mean a number of different things, none of them good. Maybe her parents mistreat her, and she deliberately tries to avoid them. Maybe they're strict and wouldn't let her do something unapproved. Maybe she has no parents or guardians at all, in addition to potentially being homeless. This one action, or lack of one, says a lot on its own.

2 She Can Override The Player's Choices

choose9 Cropped

A simple fact that could have far-reaching consequences. Deltarune is a game about choice; specifically, the lack of choice. From its opening sequence, the game drives in the message "your choices don't matter." Even so, the player is able to make many decisions over the course of the game, whether they matter or not.

Susie, however, is able to veto or reverse some of these. When choosing who to travel with in Chapter Two, Susie ignores the choice and goes on her own with Ralsei. During the Sweet Cap'n Cakes fight, Susie comes up with a new battle action on her own, despite Ralsei's insistence that Kris has to lead. Even some basic RPG concepts get turned on their head: Susie will refuse to equip inferior equipment.

1 She's Been Planned Since Undertale

goodbye10 Cropped

Series creator Toby Fox has shared some bits of information regarding planning for the game, including information about Susie. According to him, Susie was originally conceived as a spunky sidekick similar to Maya from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which gradually changed into her current tough girl form as he wrote more.

That's interesting on its own, but it's also worth noting that Susie has a single mention in Deltarune's precursor, Undertale, released in 2015, where a rarely-spawning NPC talks about a girl named "Suzy" who they suggest the player meet. In other words, Toby has been planning this story and its characters, including Susie, for years. When Deltarune releases fully, it will be very interesting to see the culmination of all those years of planning.

Deltarune Chapters One & Two are playable on PC, Switch, and Playstation 4.
