It's been two years since Deltarune, the surprise spiritual successor to the groundbreaking indie darling Undertale, launched its first chapter for free on PC and Mac. The game, which was created by Undertale creator Toby Fox, launched its first chapter on Halloween night in 2018, and now, after almost three years, Fox has announced that the second chapter of the ambitious oddball RPG Deltarune is coming later this week.

Deltarune is a spiritual successor to Undertale, which the game's title is an anagram of. Undertale first launched in September 2015 and became an instant modern classic, often regarded by many as one of the best indie games ever made. The game features similar visuals and character designs to its predecessor, however Deltarune is a more of a traditional RPG with a battle system similar to the Final Fantasy series, as opposed to its Undertale's more simplistic Earthbound-inspired battle system that rewarded avoiding combat through dialogue options similar to Shin Megami Tensei's demon conversation mechanics. Much like Undertale, Deltarune has been highly praised for its writing, which effortlessly blends humor with unforgettable characters.

After almost three years of waiting, Toby Fox announced during a recent Undertale anniversary live stream that the next chapter in Deltarune will arrive tomorrow, September 17th, at 8pm EST. Details of the release have not been revealed however it is expected that, much like the last episode, chapter 2 of Deltarune will be free for PC and Mac players and offer around 3-4 hours of gameplay. Aside from these, no other details are available regarding what content it will contain or if it will follow the characters featured in the first chapter. It also does not appear as though PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of chapter 2 will be made available until a later point.

As with Undertale, Deltarune has been the subject of many theories and rumors considering the mysterious hints and teases Toby Fox is known for including in his games, meaning fans of the series are likely already preparing to tear the latest chapter apart looking for clues and hints for what it could mean for the overarching story presented in Deltarune. Upon releasing the first episode in 2018, Toby Fox released a message to fans claiming that he intended to release the game as a full release when it was ready, making this second chapter episodic release seem somewhat unprecidented. Deltarune is intended to have more than three chapters as Fox plans on expanding the game's development team as the game's development continues.

Deltarune Chapter 2 releases September 17th 2021 for PC and Mac.
