If you play Call of Duty on the PC, get ready for a big change with the upcoming Modern Warfare 2 release. Call of Duty Community Manager Rob Bowling revealed in a podcast yesterday that Dedicated Servers are out, and matchmaking will be done in the style that users on the 360 and PS3 are used to.

The reaction from the majority of PC Gamers has been negative: players who are used to playing in Clan-based dedicated servers are shaken up, and those who wanted modded servers and game adaptations even moreso. Both features depend on dedicated servers for hosting, and their futures are perilous for the moment at best.

"This is the first time we've ever done something like this, obviously, and I know the team has huge plans for what IWNet develops into, and this is just the beginning." Bowling stated in the podcast. Indeed, it is just the beginning - but is that a good or a bad thing? For the game developer, it allows them to control a lot more of the online aspects of the game and update things more easily. However, it takes away an element of control that PC players had over the game, and eliminates the customization that brings. It's a balancing act that will be watched closely by the PC Community."

For now, there's nothing we can do but sit tight and watch how it all pans out. If the PC Community continues to react badly (and continue to petition for that matter, seeing as after a few days it's already at 65,000) once the game is actually out, I guess Modern Warfare is aptly named.
