Sony’s most recent State of Play opened with a trailer for a brand-new battle royale game titled DeathVerse: Let It Die. Given the brevity of the presentation, not much time was spent on it beyond that announcement trailer, but a post-show PlayStation Blog has provided some concrete details about the game, as well as confirmation that it is indeed tied to Let It Die.

As a reminder, Let It Die was a free-to-play action RPG roguelike released for the PlayStation 4 and PC. Published by GungHo Online Entertainment, it was developed by No More Heroes studio Grasshopper Manufacture, with Goichi "Suda51" Suda serving as executive director, and SUPERTRICK GAMES. Given the drastic change in genre, DeathVerse isn’t a sequel, but does take place in the same universe as Let It Die. In fact, it takes place hundreds of years after the events of that game.

In DeathVerse, players are competing in the Death Jamboree, a reality show that takes place inside a virtual world called the DeathVerse. This world was apparently created by the Yotsuyama Group (which also appeared in Let It Die) as a final destination for people’s souls. Contestants sign up for the show in order to win lucrative cash prizes.

The PlayStation exclusive will feature various survival-type battles so it seems like the main focus will be on deathmatches to be the last player standing. Contestants enter the game with a Wilson unit, which can transform into a weapon (examples include a katana and a hammer) and a defensive drone, as well as activate skills and fire electric bullets to stun opponents. Additional forms can be unlocked by upgrading the Wilson unit, but SUPERTRICK GAMES is keeping that s secret for now.

Much like other games of its ilk, such as Apex Legends and Fortnite, DeathVerse will be free-to-play and promises unlockable cosmetics that can either be purchased in-game or earned through season passes. One unique twist it will offer is that an invincible Hunter will appear mid-match to chase down and pick off contestants. The blog post also includes a message from Uncle Death, the mascot of Let It Die, although it’s unclear if he’ll appear in DeathVerse.

It’s interesting to note that SUPERTRICK appears to be solely handling development duties, with Grasshopper Manufacture not mentioned at all in the trailer. This is likely because Grasshopper doesn’t belong to GungHo anymore and was recently sold NetEase Games.
